CHESSGAMES - BEER

[what is this?]

Beer is believed to be over 10,000 years old. Although no one knows its exact origins, some agricultural historians believe that the first beer may have been produced accidentally when a stash of grain was soaked by rain and then warmed by the sun. If this mixture were spontaneously fermented by wild, airborne yeast—which thrives in just these warm, moist conditions—beer would have been produced (Encarta).

Fermented beverages have been preferred over water throughout the ages: they are safer, provide psychotropic effects, and are more nutritious. Some have even said alcohol was the primary agent for the development of Western civilization, since more healthy individuals (even if inebriated much of the time) lived longer and had greater reproductive success. Mar-01-07  kellmano: <Wannabe> I always thought it was because it's a pale ale brewed in the colonies during the British Empire.

If this is the answer, it's not much of a question!

A game of mine; I think the result is justified, although my opponent did not want a draw, and simply miscounted. However, the final position is a draw, assuming worst play from both sides.

Mar-01-07  SBC: <kellmano>

Whatever the particular recipe, I believe it was concocted to survive the long boat rides from England to it's colony, India and if that's true, then I guess that IPA owes it's existence to TEA.

Let us pray...

Our lager,
Which art in barrels
Hallowed be thy drink.
Thy will be drunk,
At home as it is in the tavern.
Give us this day our foamy head,
And forgive us our spillage,
As we forgive those who spill against us.
And lead us not into incarceration,
But deliver us from hangovers.
For thine is the beer, the bitter, and the lager.
Barmen.

...Cheers all!

Nice game. My student plays the Leningrad Dutch with ... c6 except he prefers ... Qe8 to support ... e5 and maybe access the Kingside via g6 or h5 later. Note the in-between move 11 ... exf3 wins two piece for a Rook, but the game was even after 11 ... Kxg7 instead. After 14. b3 you really need to get your QN into the game (14 ... Nbd7 or 14 ... Na6) instead of moving your KR to e8, and after 16. cxd5 consider 16 ... Nxd5 or 16 ... Bxd5 so your Be6 doesn't become a giant Pawn. 17 ... Qa5?! should have lost a Pawn to the Discovery 18. Nxe4!? which defends the Qd2; this is also a common tactic for Knights to swipe a center Pawn when a Bishop is pinning them. After the trades, 24. f3? was a major error by White, losing material to 24 ... exf3 25. Bxf3 f4 (25 .. g4 26. Nf4 hits the Be6) 26. Nf2 fxe3.

47 ... e3 (mate threat) 48. Rf5+ (48. h4 e2 49. Kf2 Rd1 50. Re5 Rf1+) Ke7 (avoiding d4-d5+) 49. Rxf3 e2! is decisive.

You did very well for your first tournament. Congratulations. =)

Mar-27-07  bumpmobile: <tpstar> Thanks. Someone actually pointed out 18. Nxe4 and we both whacked our forheads in dismay that we missed it. To corect you though, I did well in my first game, the rest of the tournament was near disastrous. In Round 5 I lost to the Grob in 18 moves :-)
