Mar-13-10 | | wordfunph: It is believed that Florencio Campomanes gained much of his funds for his successful FIDE presidential campaign by playing blackjack. He has a reputation as a gambler for which his inscrutable Asiatic countenance is a considerable asset. (taken from the book Kasparov-Korchnoi - The London Contest) |

 | | Troller: So Campomanes has passed away. I cannot say I will actually miss him (and I never had sympathy for the guy), but he has always been around in top chess. Well, R.I.P. Florencio. |
May-03-10 | | wordfunph: Philippines and the world chess mourns..may you rest in peace former FIDE President Florencio Campomanes. I thank you for the wonderful memories and the contributions you have brought to the chess world..we will surely miss you. |

 | | HeMateMe: Thank you for ruining the 1984 Karpov/ Kasparov match and damaging what tepid confidence we had in FIDE. |
May-03-10 | | TugasKamagong: Rest in peace, Pocamps. |

 | | Eric Schiller: An evil man who is not going to be missed. Thoroughly corrupt persecutor of those who wanted chess to move forward. Destroyer of our beloved World Championship. Some champagne with dinner tonight to wish him good riddance! |
May-03-10 | | nikolajewitsch: <Eric Schiller> You may have your reasons to harbour such feelings for him, but is it really too much to ask of you to bite your tongue for a moment on the day of his death? I mean, whatever flaws this man might have had, he was not one of mankinds great criminals... |
May-03-10 | | Jim Bartle: I'm biting my tongue, really hard. |
May-03-10 | | Petrosianic: Put a positive spin on it. I mean, when you say "Campomanes was the least crooked FIDE President in the last 28 years, it doesn't sound so bad, does it? |
May-03-10 | | nikolajewitsch: It is not about saying that he was corrupt; I don't believe that there is an obligation to be silent on people's flaws after their death.
But drinking to someone's death? That is an extreme gesture that should be saved for the truly evil (and even if he bore sole responsibility for the WC split and all problems plaguing the chess world for the past 30 years it would still not put him into that camp...). |
May-03-10
 | | HeMateMe: A young man, Gary Kasparov, was almost cheated out of the world championship by a man with questionable ties to the various chess federations, who pay his salary. Dry eyes, all around.... |
May-03-10 | | miguelito: un corrupto menos . |

May-03-10
 | | Tabanus: During his time <FIDE grew significantly, by about 50 member nations, during his tenure as FIDE president> Would that have happened with a president from US? |
May-03-10 | | spawn2: <guys>
A little respect for the dead will be highly appreciated. Thanks : ) |

May-03-10 | | wordfunph: <Eric Schiller: An evil man who is not going to be missed. Thoroughly corrupt persecutor of those who wanted chess to move forward. Destroyer of our beloved World Championship.
Some champagne with dinner tonight to wish him good riddance!> now are you happy <Eric Schiller>? your post is sick and no respect to the dead.. may bad karma won't cross your fate <Eric Schiller>.. |
May-03-10 | | acirce: I can't believe <Eric Schiller> wrote that. What a jerk. |

 | | chancho: <In 1995 Campomanes arranged for the seamless transfer of power to the present incumbent of the FIDÉ Presidency, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
In 2003 a Philippine anti-graft court convicted Campomanes for corruption involving funds of 239 million US dollars.> http://www.impalapublications.com/b... |
May-03-10 | | ozmikey: <Eric Schiller> Very undignified. Plenty of time for an assessment of his legacy in due course, but have some manners. Even Juan Antonio Samaranch was given a few days' grace before the pundits started poring over the dark side of his IOC reign. |
May-03-10
 | | HeMateMe: Yeah, straight up post, <chancho>. If someone is a thief, then he's a thief. Call it like it is. Fischer was an anti-semite. I have no problem attempting an accurate description of someone, whether they are among the living or the dead. A more accurate report on Kirsan will probably come out in a few years, after he is out of FIDE, or passed away, and there will be money stolen out of the Kalymuk republic's meager tax coffers to finance his chess fantasies--he is pretty much a clone of Karpomanes. |
May-03-10
 | | chancho: A very different version and most likely more accurate than the first link I posted: <Former FIDE president, Florencio Campomanes of the Philippines, has been sentenced to almost two years in prison on corruption charges related to funding for the 1992 Chess Olympiad in Manila. Over a quarter-million dollars from the Philippine Sports Commission was unaccounted for by FIDE. According to Campo, FIDE never accounted for such monies by providing receipts until 1993. With his usual grace Campo tried to pass the buck (no pun intended) to FIDE treasurer Willi Iclicki.> <This was reported over a week ago, but I was hoping more news would come out about whether or not he will actually go to jail, which seems unlikely according to insiders. Campo is still well-connected in his homeland. It's remarkable it made it to court at all, considering the variety of allegations Campomanes survived during his FIDE tenure. This would be a bit like convicting Saddam Hussein of illegal possession of a handgun.> http://www.chessninja.com/dailydirt... |
May-03-10 | | acirce: Campomanes was cleared of those charges by the Supreme Court in 2006. |
May-03-10
 | | chancho: <acirce> Yeah, on a technicality: <The charges against Campomanes' were overturned based upon a technicality. There was never any resolution about what happened to the 12.876 million pesos mentioned in the above paragraph. The rationale for the overturn was that the Supreme Court of the Philippines decided that Campomanes was not a government official to whom the anti-graft laws applied. Thus as a non-government official, Campomanes had no duty under the law he was prosecuted to render an accounting of the 12.876 million pesos.[2]> |
May-03-10 | | acirce: Okay, that's possible. Never studied the case in much detail. :-) |
May-03-10 | | pulsar: The man is dead and the living rush to judgment.
I am young enough not to know much about the man, but I know that he is well-loved on some sides as much as he is well-hated on others. Rest in peace, Florencio Campomanes. |
