Jul-19-05  Marvol: Jannes van der Wal (b. 1956) was a brilliant Dutch checkers/draughts player. (The proper (international) type of checkers, with the 10x10 board that is, not the watered-down version with silly rules on the 8x8 board that is most known :-P). He became WC checkers in 1982.

He also played chess and he was one of few players to be good at both games.

He had a very lively character that made him exceptionally original. In checkers he would mix brillant moves with capital mistakes. His absentmindedness led to him missing the opening round of a checkers tournament once because he fell asleep on the train and missed the station (this is a famous anecdote about him).

He died in 1996 from leukemia, sadly, way too early.

Dec-19-05  OneArmedScissor: "Van der Wal" forces...

Doesn't that have something to do with physics?

TheAlchemist: Yes, but it's actually "van der Waals forces". They're intermolecular forces

Nov-15-09  sneaky pete: Jannes gained immortality when in December 1982, after he had become world champion, he was invited to appear in a <talk>show on Dutch television and didn't say a single word, the entire show. The first question the hostess asked: "Jannes, how old are you?", left him flabbergasted. Would no one of that impressively large tv crew have taken the trouble of finding out such simple statistics? Just when he had finished his contemplation and was about to answer, a next question was fired at him, posing a similar problem: could it be that the other person didn't know such a basic fact? Must he the really answer this question?

So Jannes just sat there and smiled. He was a great smiler.
