Kenneth Philip Neat was born in York, England. Dr Neat studied physics obtaining a doctorate based on his research with cosmic rays and then attended Moscow University from 1968 to 1970 for postdoctoral work. Proficient in Russian, he became a leading translator of Russian chess books into English.
