  chessgames.com: Is Alexey Sergeevich Selezniev an alternate-spelling (wrong spelling) of this player?
Mar-12-05  Resignation Trap: <<chessgames.com> Is Alexey Sergeevich Selezniev an alternate-spelling (wrong spelling) of this player?>

No! But A Sergeev IS. (The odd 1980 game was played by a different Sergeev)

Both Selezniev and Sergeev played in the Fourth USSR Championship (Leningrad 1925). With some scrolling you can find a photograph of the participants here: http://www.rogerpaige.me.uk/histori...

You can also find the crosstable of this tournament here: http://members.aol.com/graemecree/c... . However, please note that on this crosstable, Sergeev's first name is incorrectly given as "Vladimir", while Selezniev's name was transliterated as "Seleznyov".

Jan-06-14  Nosnibor: <Resignation Trap> Sergeev played Selezniev also in the third (1924) and fifth (1927) USSR Championships.All games between them were drawn.If he was Moscow Champion in 1924/25 why was he not invited to play in the Moscow International Tournament of 1925 when Subarev played who finished below Sergeiv in the USSR Championship,Leningrad 1925 and appears not to be quite as strong as Sergeiev.
Sep-25-15  zanzibar: Just check RUSbase for the debut of 7.Qg4 O-O Winawer, and RUSbase spells his name <Sergeev>.

  perfidious: Depending on the translation, Sergeyev and Sergejew may also be possibilities, a not uncommon phenomenon with such surnames in other instances.
Sep-26-15  zanzibar: Yes, <perfidious>, I agree that different transliterations could be used.

Sometimes, there's a little more to the story, e.g. some cultural wrinkle somebody like myself might not know about.

Other times there might be little more to the story. I'd like to see how BCM or some other English-language contemporaneous reporting spelled his name.

In Cyrillic it's this:

<Александр Сергеевич Сергеев>

(https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A...)

which google translates as <Alexander Sergeevich Sergeev>.

My natural bias is to follow RUSbase as much as possible (and also to use the simpler spellings if possible). Happens to match Google translate.

I'll just note that 365chess also uses Sergeev.

Wiki, however, uses <Aleksandr Sergeyevich Sergeyev>.
