Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:
For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).
In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).
The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.
Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.
The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!
Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Mar-23-10		Honza Cervenka: Hi lostemperor, I don’t know whether you have read my recent messages at Kibitzer’s Café or not and so I am posting it here too. On Monday of last week I have become proud father of (the second) daughter named Aneta. You can see her picture on the site of regional newspaper “Kladensky denik” (Kladno’s Daily) at http://kladensky.denik.cz/miminka/m... where is just now till this Friday (12:00 A.M. CET) running a polling contest for the most sympathetic baby born last week in regional maternity hospitals organized by the newspaper. Personally I am not much interested in such a kind of competitions but my wife likes it very much and she would be much happy to see our little girl on the top. Right now we are on the second place in very tense and close race with two other contenders and so every additional vote is very important for the final outcome. She was already first when I checked with 1099 votes and got 5 votes in the five minutes orso I was watching (I am # 1104). Have a great time with your extended family!

May-14-10		lostemperor: On last year's Corus quiz question: <How many moves does a super GM, take Kasparov, think in critical positions?> The answer was/is 16 ply!! I still owe you the source where Kasparov made that statement. The statement was in the Dutch tournament book "Fontys Schaaktoernooi Tilburg 1997" after round 5 against Alexei Shirov. This was the game Shirov vs Kasparov, 1997 Kasparov was talking in general terms. This is what Kasparov said: <Shirov maybe a very good tactician when I have my form I am still better. I regulary train with computers. This has a strong influence on your way of thinking and calculating. Ever more often I calculate six till eight moves deep. That is 16 ply and is not bad.> Indeed it is not!
