IMlday: Bryon died early this morning, peacefully, in his sleep. A heart attack followed successful treatment of Hodgkin's Disease. Sad..
Aug-04-04   Lawrence: <IMlday>, thank you for all that info on the Nickoloff vs Joel Benjamin, 1988 page. How sad and unfair that he died so young.
Aug-07-04   Lawrence: There's a tribute to <Bryon Nikoloff> today at

http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

Aug-07-04   ruylopez900: Yes, thanks to chessbase for putting the tribute to Byron up, with several favourite/good games of his including:

<Molchanov-Nickoloff>, 2004 Canadian Open (Last game played) <Nickoloff-Spraggett>, 1974 Canadian Junior <Wachtel-Nickoloff>, 1975 Toronto Closed <Watson-Nickoloff>, 1988 Saint John International Open <Nickoloff-Hulak>, 1989 New York Open <Nickoloff-LeSiege>, 1994 (twice) <Shirov-Nickoloff>, 1994 North Bay International Open

Thanks for the games.

Mar-09-06   EmperorAtahualpa: Nice haircut. :)
Mar-09-06   Fan of Leko: I played Nickoloff once, back in the 80's, and lucked into a draw (which upset him somewhat). I had no idea he was dead, or had even been ill. I know people who have recovered from Hodgkin's, but have long term effects from the chemo and radiation treatments.
Mar-09-06   EmperorAtahualpa: Oops, only now I notice that he has passed away already. I didn't mean any disrespect in my above kibitz.

tamar: <EmperorAtahualpa> You can read some biography, and some tributes at Nickoloff vs J Benjamin, 1988

Sounds like quite a character.

refutor: Finished IM Lawrence Day's labour of love "Nick's Best" and I highly recommend it. The games are interesting, the annotations enjoyable and the stories are fabulous! It's a nice biography

The tribite <Lawrence> mentioned is well done - have a look.

"In 1999 doctors told Bryon Nickoloff that he had cancer and less than six months to live. But the well-known Canadian IM survived for five years, playing strong chess tournaments to the very end. His last game was at the Canadian Open in July, where he defeated his opponent with the black pieces."

RIP
