Jul-05-12 | | Cemoblanca: Just reading "Dynamic Chess Strategy" by Mr. Subaman! ;0) Very entertaining & easy style! The introduction of this wonderful book says already everything: "I made a late debut in chess. Until the age of 20 I was more interested in other leisure activities. The only tournament I played in below this age ended in a catastrophe with me scoring 0 points out of 13 games! :D Absolutely recommended! Very well done Mr. Subaman! Thank you & all the best for you & yours! Greetings! :0) |

 | | Sally Simpson: That is a smashing collection of games Everett. His 1980's book 'Dynamic Chess' was (and still is) refreshing, well written and thought provoking.
I agree 100% with him; if you 'feel' confident about a sacrifice just do it. You do not have to analyse all the variations. Your opponent has to do that! Also see the post by The Focus above.
Regarding that dynamic thinking, the funny part bit is I had been playing like he suggested for years before reading the book (though he did it a lot better.) it was wonderful to read a really good and gifted player felt the same way. James Plaskett was writing about him yesterday.
"He [Suba] was rated comfortably above 2500 for several years and defeated many top GMs. His best games contain elements of genius..." https://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopi... |

 | | Sally Simpson: There is an updated version out. (2016)
My copy, which is about somewhere is the 1980's one. I suspect the later version will have more modern examples where players have used his guidelines or caught his infectious enthusiasm for his ideas. Take a trip to here Suba vs L Roos, 1978 |

 | | Check It Out: Nice. Thanks, fellas. I'm sure I'll post more here after digesting the book for a while. |
|
Jan-06-23 | | Olavi: I have read the 1991 original a few times, it would be nice to read comparative studies. Well that goes for many books in several editions, maybe I have to order the new version myself. I remember there is a review by Sadler in New in Chess 2016, but I also remember it isn't helpful in this respect. (Unsurprisingly.) |

 | | Sally Simpson: CHESS magazine had a mini review>
In the battle of chess ideas, the publication in 1991 of Dynamic Chess Strategy was a defining moment.
Before Mihai Suba’s exceptional book, chess writers had neglected one of the most important factors of a chess position: its dynamic potential. Suba demonstrated that the traditional concept of ‘improving the position’ was often static and irrelevant, and that classical strategy, if applied dogmatically, can prevent you from
finding the right plan and its subsequent moves. 'Dynamic Chess Strategy' won the 1991 British Chess Federation Book of the Year Award and was hailed as an instant modern classic.
Grandmaster Mihai Suba has updated his groundbreaking work and extended it with even more entertaining and witty lessons. The result is a thought-provoking and yet practical guide on chess strategy! (1991! I thought it was the late 80's. I now remember where my copy is. It was donated to the club library along with a load of other doublers - 'cept this was not a doubler! I bet I mixed it up with Coles 'Dynamic Chess ' Ah well, never mind. I'll borrow my book from the library.) |

 | | Fusilli: I googled Mihai Suba health and found something to the effect that he had some health trouble in 2014 requiring a spell in the hospital. That is very little to go by, but it was around that time that his rating began to decline. |
