May-18-06  lopium: "In 1993 whilst playing in Argentina " whilst, is it my English that is too incomplete, or is it a little error?
May-18-06  ganstaman: Whilst is one of those funny little words that I don't think anyone actually uses anymore unless they are trying to sound old or smart. Unless it actually is used outside of the US, in which case I wouldn't know about it.

Ok, checking with dictionary.com, it says that whilst means while, and it is chiefly used in British English.

May-19-06  lopium: Nice word! Thank you ganstaman, I hope I will use it in my next exam.

Oct-04-07  aazqua: This guy is the biggest chese puff you'll find in chess. I couldn't find a single interesting game he won on his own merits. Take a look at his notable games - four examples of inexplicable blunders but good players to hand Pedrag winning positions. Talk about damning with faint praise.

HeMateMe: I have a book by Predrag Nikolic, somewhere.
Feb-19-11  sevenseaman: I agree with <kramputz>. The general impression I have of Nicolic calibre, his TPR should be close to 2700.
Feb-19-11  AnalyzeThis: 2019 guys don't tie with Ivanchuk for first.
Feb-19-11  jovack: Bosnian Serb
Oct-31-11  waustad: His rating at the moment is 2645: http://ratings.fide.com/id.phtml?ev...
Nov-29-11  th3doctor: pretty sure if you can win this endgame against Korchnoi:

P Nikolic vs Korchnoi, 1987

you'll never be a 2032 again

Feb-18-12  AlphaMale: According to Chessmetrics, Nikolic was the strongest 10-11 year old in history:

http://chessmetrics.com/cm/CM2/Play...

I suspect this is due to a case of mistaken identity based on the result of this event:

Penguincw: Fast forward about 9 months from his 54th birthday:

Congrats to Predrag Nikolic for his performance at the Bosna Open. Entering as the 4th seed at 2618, he won the first game, then drew the next, and then another win, 2 more draws, 2 more wins, another draw and 1 last win to finish with 7/9 and a 5-way tie for 1st (but 5th after tiebreaks). He was also the highest placing Bosnian.

His June rating was 2601, and he gains 0.1 points, so it's going to remain there. :|

Sep-11-20  diagonal: 60 years, Happy Birthday, GM Predrag Nikolic!

Peak ranking as <no. 6= of the world> in 1988 (January to July list), behind only dominating Kasparov on top, and Karpov, the two players above 2700 Elo, followed by Timman, Beliavsky, and Korchnoi, together with Short and Tal at Elo 2630. Big names indeed!

Peak rating much later in 2004 and 2005 at Elo 2676, out of top twenty.

Nikolic <won twice at the traditional and prestigious Wijk aan Zee>: in 1994 as clear first ahead of Tiviakov (ten players, top seeded: I. Sokolov) and 1989, shared with Ribli, Sax, and young Anand (14 players, top seeded: Ribli), both editions weren't that powerful, compared to other Wijk aan Zee tournaments.

Nikolic also <won twice at Bosna>, then a pretty strong international invitation tournament at Sarajevo, in 1983 (clear first ahead of Smejkal, Adorjan, Kurajica, including Gligoric, 16 players), and in 1987 (clear first 1.5 points ahead of Vaganian, Polugaevsky, followed by Miles, Seirawan, etc., twelve players, this was his best career performance according to Chessmetrics by Sonas). In addition, Nikolic was later several times (co-)winner of the Open at Sarajevo, which has now a more local character (Bosna series switched format).

National Championships: Predrag Nikolic is a two times <Champion of former Yugoslavia>, two times <Champion of The Netherlands>, and once (at least) a <Champion of Bosnia and Herzegovina>.

At the Interzonal in Zagreb in 1987, Nikolic narrowly failed to qualify for the Candidate's, sharing fourth place behind Korchnoi, who won at age of 56 (the oldest player ever to win an Interzonal), and joint runners-up Ehlvest and Seirawan, three players to advance.

In the following cycle, at the Interzonal in Manila in 1990, played in swiss system, Nikolic <qualified for the Candidate's>.

In his 1/7-final (Karpov was seeded directly) in January / February 1991 in Sarajevo, Nikolic tied Gelfand (4-4, two wins, two losses, four draws), but was just edged out in the rapid play-off (5.5-4.5 end result). Boris Gelfand then was the clear no. 3 of the world.

<World Senior Chess Champion (section 50+) in 2015> at age of 55.

This year, in early Spring 2020, Predrag Nikolic won a veteran’s Quadrangular, the “Old Masters Rapid Tournament”, it was held over a weekend alongside the 80th Daniel Noteboom Memorial in Leiden, the Netherlands. Participants were Hübner (the nestor of the group, 72 years), Karpov, Timman (both 69), and Nikolic (60). Nikolic went undefeated at 4.5/6, he beat Timman twice and Karpov once in the double round-robin event.

perfidious: <FSR>, Nikolic may yet have a shot at seeing his way through that chessic scythe of 64 beginning next year, same as the two of us.

FSR: <perfidious> The scythe of 64 is not uniformly deadly. One does occasionally see a player emerge unscathed on the other side.

perfidious: <FSR>, I must take especial care, having gone from one sedentary pursuit to another; poker players often call it a day in their fifties and sixties.

Actually saw Nikolic play once, at the Grand Prix in New York in June 1994, but he was the statue that day and not the pigeon, losing 0-2 to Kasparov, as Kramnik beat Ivanchuk in the other semifinal.
