Jul-09-04  shr0pshire: I was looking at the world open results, and it says Golod is rated 2788 USCF!?!. Clearly I thought this could not be, so I went and checked on USchess.org and at 12-03 his rating was 2612 USCF. In less than three months later 02-04 he had a rating of 2788 USCF. http://www.64.com/uscf/ratings/1289...

Does anyone know anything about this?

I checked his fide rating, and it is only 2538. How did his USCF rating get to be 250 points higher than his fide rating so quickly?

Jul-09-04  AgentRgent: Because his rating is still provisional... http://www.uschess.org/msa/MbrDtlTn...
Jul-09-04  shr0pshire: Okay thanks. That makes sense.

Sneaky: I don't know if they still do it this way, but when I signed up the provisional rating was calculated by making a list of the first 20 rated people you played. You added 400 points to every rating that you beat, and you subtract 400 points from every rating that beat you. Then you take the average and that's your intiial rating.

I could easily see a GM getting 2800+ in the USCF system if he got off to a good start.
