Zahar Efimenko was awarded the Grandmaster title in 2002. He was the World Under-14 champion in 1999 and champion of Ukraine in 2006. He qualified for the World Cup (2011) through his results in the European Individual Championships (2010). He defeated Czech GM Vlastimil Babula and Hungarian GM Ferenc Berkes in rounds one and two, but was eliminated from the contest in the third round rapid-game (25+10) tiebreaker by Ukrainian GM and former FIDE World Champion Ruslan Ponomariov.
