Dec-29-16  PhilFeeley: Nice upsets on top boards. Sethuraman losing and Fier held to a draw.
Dec-29-16  CountryGirl: Watch out for Bobby Cheng.
Dec-31-16  Betterthan99: where is gingerGM, great commentator but he pushes the worst dvds as his play is pathetic.
Jan-01-17  LuckyChucky: Still watching out for Bobby Cheng. Does he have ebola or something?
Jan-01-17  WorstPlayerEver: Hehe Praggna kept a draw while he was about dead lost from the start of the middle game.

Study case of how not to convert a R vs R+2p into a win.

Jan-01-17  Thirups: Pragnna was lucky though..!
Jan-01-17  WorstPlayerEver: <Thirups> Yes, but White's e4,g5 extra pawns are not easy to convert in a Rook end. However, I will comment later on the game.
Jan-02-17  LuckyChucky: Sixth round is starting in an hour or two - but CG's report shows results after 6 rounds. Really impressive!
Jan-02-17  disasterion: <LuckyChucky>: fifth round games count double, apparently.

perfidious: Time will tell whether that is a scoring system superior to using the football 3-1-0. (laughs)
Jan-02-17  Nosnibor: Mark Hebden appears to have missed a draw by playing Bxb2 instead of Re1!!
Jan-02-17  WorstPlayerEver: For the occasion I created a special puzzle: The Witches of Hastings

Whites mates in 72 moves

Jan-02-17  zanzibar: Tournament details (intro apparently lacking above):

<he event was declared open on Wednesday 28th by Cllr. Judy Rogers the Mayor of Hastings who is also President of the Hastings Congress.

Chairman, Paul Smith welcomed the Mayor and welcomed participants to the event. He was joined by Bernard Power, son of the late Con Power who was Director of the event for many years. Con’s family have made a generous donation to the Congress which is very much appreciated.

Alan Hustwayte drew the names of junior players who would each be receiving £100 bursary, courtesy of the John Robinson Trust. They were Freddie Hand, Dominic Miller, Matthew Forster, Koby Kalavannan and Adam C Taylor.

[...]

The number of players is slightly up on last year at the opening and there are 97 players in the Masters and around 300 entries overall. 28 countries are represented, 11 GM’s, 1 WGM and numerous U-18 and U-21 players.

[... and a little color]

Chris Ward’s commentary is proving popular again and the games are being watched online. Today Chris will be joined in the commentary room by GM Matthew Sadler and WIM Natasha Regan, authors of the ECF Book of the Year ‘Chess for Life’.>

A nine-round accelerated Swiss Pairing tournament – Wednesday 28 December 2016 to Thursday 5 January 2017

40 moves in 100 minutes, followed by all remaining moves in 50 minutes, with the addition of 30 seconds for each move from the start.

[entrance fee info deleted]

Prizes: £2000, £1200, £750, £500, £350, £250, £200 There will also be prizes of £200 each for —
• The highest placed female player
• The highest placed player who is neither a GM nor IM • Best relative FIDE rating performance by a player rated under 2200. • Best relative FIDE rating performance by a player aged under 18. No player may win both rating prizes.

Tradewise Insurance will award prizes for those not already holding 3 norms, achieving GM/WGM or IM/WIM FIDE title norms, which will be valid towards titles. GM/WGM norms £200 and IM/WIM norms £100. Horntye will present a prize of £100 and a trophy for the “Winner of Best Game”. Congress Director, Alan Hustwayte, will present a prize for best performance against rating. The two highest placed eligible players not already qualified will be entitled to play in the 2017 British Championship.

Players, other than grandmasters, may take a half point bye in any round of the Masters apart from the last. Notice must be given early on the previous evening. This is particularly suitable on New Year’s Day.

Jan-02-17  WorstPlayerEver: Praggna creates his own puzzles which he still doesn't solve lol

White wins

Jan-02-17  zanzibar: <WPE> what move - maybe time trouble explains the oversight?

Not an easy move to find, but a good interference example, imo.

(Checked - it was move 39)

Jan-02-17  WorstPlayerEver: <zanzibar>

Oh sorry, Praggna-Flear (6)
White to move (38...Nf6-d5??) 39.?

Yes, Praggna is a time trouble addict. From move 24 he had 30s for each move. Weird enough he created this chance out of nothing...

Richard Taylor: I beat Bobby Cheng once. He was only 10 but still pretty strong. Also another game was a draw. He then moved to Australia from NZ.

He beat me in Rapid games. I remember the simul when Short said he and Harry Ruan were very strong for their age...they both lasted a long time. Short only lost one game I think to FM Bruce Watson. Benzol ( a member here) obtained a draw...

Jan-03-17  WorstPlayerEver: In the old days they would say: "Seventeen and yet not a master? Too old.."
Jan-03-17  LuckyChucky: CG is going back to the future again: while the 7th round is being contested, eight-round scores are being reported for many players in the table above. Why bother publishing it, if it's so obviously wrong?
Jan-03-17  WorstPlayerEver: Praggna seems to be winning. I don't know what a GM result stands for in Hastings.

Siva-Praggna after White played 17. Bf1

Black to move wins

Jan-03-17  zanzibar: <WPE> what does it mean "a GM result stands for"?

I'm guessing you might mean a GM norm, but without any context it's not clear.

* * * * *

Also, can I ask a favor?

When diagramming a tactical could you please copy the FEN in twice, and modify the 2nd copy so <CG> doesn't diagram it.

That would allow me to quickly cut-and-paste copy it into SCID to check my analysis (ok, guess).

I normally just insert a blank space before the first slash, like this:

click for larger view

r1kr1b1r /1bp2ppp/p7/4n3/3p4/6N1/PP3qPP/RNBQRB1K b - - 0 1

BTW- I guessed correctly, and the strongest move is rather nice. But the position isn't sharp - i.e. Black has more than one move which still gives a crushing eval or win in this position.

E.g. the 3rd candidate move, which is surprisingly a retreat: 3...Qf6 (-3.85/22 sf8)

PS- I'll ask <CG> again to enhance the FEN display feature by adding a "view FEN" button to the diagram, or somesuch. That would be preferred, and render my request above moot, of course.

Jan-03-17  zanzibar: *3...Qf6 = 1...Qf6
Jan-03-17  WorstPlayerEver: <zanzibar>
Yes thanks, 'GM norm' I meant. Ok. I will do that with FEN.

About the position, it's not an easy win. However, I wanted to show the attacking style of Praggna.

Jan-03-17  zanzibar: <WPE> oh lordy, I just blindly copied the position in the diagram, focusing on the attack. But I screwed up.

Did you happen to notice that Black has three rooks in my mis-copied version?

That little old pawn promoted and got back to a8 faster than you can say Libby Scooter!

My bad, sorry for that.

* * * * *

(Now the position is sharp, and 1...Qf6 is the 2nd candidate move, giving White the advantage.

Black has to play 17...Nf3 to win, gaining a Q+3P vs. BNN advantage.

I guess Siva played on. How long? )

Jan-03-17  WorstPlayerEver: <zz>

Lol, I think you are on to something 9×9 Extra Rook on d1/9. Castle very long Kb1/b9, Rc1/c9 when the d-Rook has moved from the first/ninth rank.

Certainly becomes more attacking then.

NB there are Rooks on light and dark squares. Otherwise the Rook on a1/a9 and the Rook on i1/i9 would have the same color. Makes sense!
