Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Maehrisch-Ostrau (1923)

In the summer of 1923, the Witkowitzer Eisenwerke organized a round robin chess event to be held in Mährisch-Ostrau, Czechoslovakia (Mährisch is German for Moravian, Ostrau is Ostrava). In addition to thirteen other European masters, a contract was secured for former world champion Emanuel Lasker to participate. The players were billeted at the Hotel Royal and games were played from July 1-18 in Witkowitz, a suburb of Ostrava. The event culminated in another victory for Lasker, who finished undefeated in his first tournament since 1918, a full point ahead of second place Réti.

The final standings and crosstable:

Nov-02-12  Benzol: Lasker might have wondered how he'd go against the hypermoderns. As it turned out he didn't need to worry.
Nov-03-12  ughaibu: The crosstable gives Reti five draws, but it appears he had six.
Nov-03-12  ughaibu: Selezniev-Bogolubow is an incorrect result, in the crosstable.
Nov-03-12  Chessdreamer: the result of the game Reti vs M Walter, 1923 is incorrect, should be 1-0.
Nov-03-12  Benzol: Clearly there are still some teething problems that need to be ironed out. However, Rome wasn't built in a day.

Phony Benoni: Looks like A Selezniev vs Bogoljubov, 1923 is a color problem. Chess365 has Bogo playing White, which would clear that problem up.

Apparently, the player listing at the top is compiled from the games themselves, while the crosstable is from another source. When either the game or the crosstable has incorrect information, we get discrepancies.

At least we will more easily catch these errors now. The CG Librarian's work is never done.

Nov-03-12  Benzol: Has anybody actually reported these problems to the admins yet?
Nov-03-12  ughaibu: On the Selezniev game, the next question is, which site is correct?
Nov-03-12  Karpova: <ughaibu: The crosstable gives Reti five draws, but it appears he had six.>

No, Reti beat Walter (the game is given as a draw here)

<ughaibu: Selezniev-Bogolubow is an incorrect result, in the crosstable.>

Bogoljubov beat Selezniev so the latter ended up in 4th place with 7.5 points.

Phony Benoni: <Benzol> I have sent in correction slips for A Selezniev vs Bogoljubov, 1923 (switch colors) and Reti vs M Walter, 1923 (change result to 1-0). Once those are made, I assume that the tournament standings will be automatically updated.

The crosstable appears to be correct, so there is no need to change that.

Nov-03-12  Benzol: Ok, thanks Dave.
Nov-03-12  Gypsy: <The crosstable appears to be correct, so there is no need to change that.>

The X-table agrees with that given by Kalandovsky in 'Richard Reti, sachovy myslitel' (Chess-Thinker Richard Reti).

It looks like an original photo from the tournament book. I've only the BCM reprint, so a scan won't help to get a better quality.

Just two wins. But one immortal game and one "merely" brilliant.

Rubinstein vs Hromadka, 1923

Tarrasch vs Rubinstein, 1923

FSR: A great triumph for Lasker. As far as I can see, this was Selesniev's best tournament. An excellent +2 result against a very strong field.
