Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Palma de Mallorca (1971)

The event was organized by the Spanish Chess Federation and sponsored by the City of Palma. (1) After a series of tournaments including Palma de Mallorca (1969) and Palma de Mallorca Interzonal (1970), it appeared that the organization this time suffered economic problems. (2) FIDE had apparently reduced its support, and was looking elsewhere after the Interzonal. The Soviets chose to play instead in the 2nd Alekhine Memorial in Moscow (1971). According to Chessmetrics, (3) the highest ranked of the 16 players were Larsen (#4), Portisch (#8), Panno (#27) and Reshevsky (#34). Larsen tried to win again, but he pressed too hard and also turned down draw offers from Panno and Reshevsky. (4) Jorge Puig Laborda was the tournament director. (5) This and Palma de Mallorca (1972) would be the last of the Palma super-GM events.
