Mar-05-17  ColeTrane: I see they're all drawing after 5 moves..... Lame!
Mar-05-17  PhilFeeley: Great. This is already over before anyone knew it was on.

Onischuk won BTW, 9/11, Shirov a distant whatever, 7.5/11. Sad.

Mar-06-17  siggemannen: This is not THE Tal Memorial though.
Mar-06-17  stst: Qs:
1. Why Tal Memorial is degraded to Rapid (only)? Looks like Tal does not deserve the high respect??

2. Five / Six moves ?? WHY - it's like child's play?? What are the organizers thinking?? Not only "Lame," it's "SHAME!!"

3. The participants?? - Who stands out, what ELO??

Better simply abolish this one, or let some more respectable organizers do it in a high profile event.

Feel free to organize a better event, you obviously know how to do it.

Mar-06-17  Sokrates: In the Tal Memorial 2016 there were players like Kramnik, Anand, Giri, Aronian, Svidler, Nepomniatschi - two floors above this lot - with all due respect and an apology to the great Shirov.

Troller: The Tal Memorial 2016 was the classical Moscow Tournament organized by the Russian Chess Federation. That tournament has had different names over the years I believe. I do not think the RCF has anything to do with this event, so no need to compare them.
Mar-06-17  virginmind: What's with the 5 move games? Especially Shabalov's, completely weird - as if protesting to something?
Mar-06-17  7he5haman: Maybe some of the 5-6 movers are incomplete?! Excluding the Shabalov one obviously.
Mar-06-17  Sokrates: Understood, <Troller>, thanks. Wasn't aware of that.
Mar-06-17  stst: 1. Sure we know how to do it, but need your help (for at least a bitcoin!?) Yet if all the big shots agree to play (only for Tal's Honor,) then there's almost no issue?! (still need the venue and some supplies - no boards nor pieces necessary though, as these big shots should be able to play blind-folded?!)

2. Same name, np, but pl. specify - even understood that Tal won't mind any more... but, in modern times, from a legal standpoint, there might be issues of doing that.

Mar-06-17  stst: <Shabalov's, completely weird - as if protesting to something>

... Hmm, could be, they all got caught by the Whirl of How!!

Mar-06-17  stst: <Castle early and often...>

From CG !?!

How "often" we can castle?? - If done, once is enough (in one game of course! what else?)

Mar-07-17  zanzibar: <stst> Here's a couple of games where they castled more than once for a given side:

Torre – Reti, Baden Baden (1925) and Kindermann – Korchnoi (1995)

https://chess24.com/en/read/news/th... (#3)

Maybe there some others here:

Game Collection: Castling Incidents

Mar-07-17  stst: < a couple of games where they castled more than once for a given side:>

Of course we're talking about legal moves. Accidents, or special permission by the Arbiter under some circumstances, etc are not counted.

The point is kind of semantic wrangling... if what's said contradicts the ruling, then ?? Thought that's obvious, e.g. some movie may carry the title "Dying Twice!!" or "Born Again" -- my make up, such things might come up (if not past, present, then must be in future?) Unless scientists discover there's actually some time NONE OF THE ABOVE (LOL again!!)

Mar-07-17  zanzibar: <stst> not to beat a dead horse too much, but an illegal move becomes legal if not corrected in time.

So, yes, you can indeed truly castle more than once in a game.

But on the whole, the <CG> saying is a little dumb. People enjoy the occasional dumb humor round these parts. The puns are proof positive of this.

(As far as time travel goes, despite Kip Thorne's and other's work, I'm inclined to think it not possible. It certainly messes up causality, at the very least.)

Mar-08-17  starry2013: zanzibar: <not to beat a dead horse too much, but an illegal move becomes legal if not corrected in time.>

Yes and this would be the greatest ever protest game or just an agreed drawn game between two players. Rewrite the rules of chess with impossible moves and then agree a draw. It would be the most entertaining agreed draw ever.

Mar-08-17  Sularus: 5 moves? Tal is drinking in his grave.
Mar-08-17  stst: < an illegal move becomes legal if not corrected in time.>

This recalls me to a movie I saw on a flight: "Black Mess."

There, the capo told/taught his son in front of his mom: "It's ok doing that, if you're not caught."

Same "logic?" -- Murder with no one caught is not murder, or, per your dictum: "illegal moves become legal if not corrected in time."

Indeed, so many (Human) mistakes + errors committed... and repeated...with the "help" of this odd occurrence -- they're not corrected in time.

Mar-08-17  zanzibar: OK, maybe saying an illegal move become legal is a bit of a misstatement.

I was trying to be pithy.

A better statement, drawing a legal parallel, is that an illegal move on the chessboard is subject to a statue of limitation.

So it might always have been an illegal move, but at some point it isn't subject to prosecution.

As for the murder analogy, it clearly doesn't apply, because murderous offenses are never subject to a statue of limitation.

I haven't really thought too much about felonies vs misdemeanors on the chessboard.

(Well, other than the grievousness of my own blunders, that is.)

Mar-08-17  beenthere240: "Vote early and often" is probably the parent of the CG joke.
Mar-08-17  beenthere240: Of course the current US president believes this is what occurred in the recent election. Bad!
Mar-09-17  stst: <..an illegal move on the chessboard is subject to a statue of limitation.>

Yeah, chess becomes more than chess. Maybe we need some heavy weight attorneys to drill into the "statues" and "limitations" of the current version of chess rules, for even as simple the legality of castling!!

It's certainly beyond me, both in resources and time, to dig into that. But raising such "issue" certainly widen my scope of chess - much more than chess!!

Probably as many lawyers talked about Rule of Law (or maybe even more on top of that...for that logic to expand and evolve? revolve? or convolute??)

Mar-09-17  Pedro Fernandez: Interesting those reflections which have made <Troller> and <Sokrates> about Tal Memorial tournament. In fact I have always thought that this tournament should be of category XX and up. However I also think that the Tal is an opportunity for the young FMs and IMs to gain norms and improve their level of playing. Just my opinion.
Mar-10-17  stst: <Tal is an opportunity for the young FMs and IMs to gain norms ..>

Maybe so. Else may imitate other "big" events to have "Master Class" and "Open."

Yet sad, enough, all hinges on the loot, and I saw other Memorials, for either Capa or Alek also fall into such lower echelons. On Contrary, look at Tata Steel, Sinquefeld, or the latest Grand Tour... they attract the top guns. WHY?? The loot!! (& also the ladder!! -- get the point?!)
