Jul-15-22 | | stone free or die: <sachistu: <stone free or die> I sent confirmation of Davis's death to the Michigan Chess Association today, so you should see something on their site soon.> Thanks for the info.
Somehow a notice of his death on MCA will provide some measure of closure, especially given how much he contributed there (as well as here). . |
|
Jul-15-22
 | | monopole2313: Another Michigander gone. Two years ago we lost Tony Palmer . Both were great contributors. |

 | | chancho: PB was one of the most decent of posters here, bar none. He will be sorely missed on these pages.
Rest in Peace. |
|
Jul-15-22 | | stone free or die: Did anybody learn from David how he happened to "latch on" to chess? Basically anything about how he started playing. (He himself wrote about how he began his publishing career). |
|
Jul-19-22 | | stone free or die: <MCA> made a very brief notice of his death on July 15, giving a link to this page: <Michigan Chess Association shared a link.July 15 at 10:22 PM ·
We have just learned of the passing of Michigan Chess Hall of Fame member, David Moody, on June 25, 2022. He was the long time editor of Michigan Chess magazine in the 1980's and 1990's. Several of his chess games can be found online here: https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessplayer ?pid=32905> |
|
Aug-02-22 | | Benzol: Have only just learnt of David's passing.
With it we've all lost a great deal at this site.
We'll miss your knowledge and your wonderful sense of humour.
RIP my friend and kindred spirit. |

Sep-24-22 | | jerseybob: <perfidious: <PB> was yet another of those players whose personality and playing style were poles apart: unfailingly pleasant and mild in temperament, yet played with great ferocity.
It is regrettable that David could not have gone out on his own terms. He will be missed.> Yes! |
|
Sep-29-22 | | stone free or die: OK, this is a bit of an unfortunate question to ask, but ask it I must. Does anybody know if David's chess materials were properly handed off? I know he had many tournament bulletins that would be almost impossible to locate elsewhere. I'm sure he intended to get to it all at some point - but was it backed up, boxed up, and kept? I always wished that stuff got scanned and published on the net. I hate to think any of it got tossed. . |

Dec-07-22 | | sachistu: FYI...

Apr-20-23 | | sachistu: Regarding my kibitz from Dec 7,2022... The tree dedication is planned for June 21,2023 at McNichols Campus (aka the main campus) at the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit. It is scheduled to begin at 1:30pm, with a brief ceremony followed by a light reception inside the library. For anyone living in the Detroit area and wishing to attend, there will also be an opportunity for anyone attending to say something during the ceremony. The tree is expected to be planted prior to the ceremony, which will be a timesaver for those attending. The former dean of Detroit Mercy, Margaret Auer, is slated to read the text of the plaque, which will be placed at the base of the tree. The text will read:
David W. Moody
1951 - 2022
Cataloging Librarian
Chess Aficionado
Renowned for His
Wealth of Knowledge
I realize most of us are not in close proximity to Detroit; however, anyone planning on attending can get in touch with Kris McLonis, so that she can plan for enough refreshments. Her email address is:

Dec-05-23 | | edroche1111: I played in the US Open in 1969 at Aspen. I beat S. Levine in the last round. Perhaps you can fill that result into the cross table. Thanks- Ed Roche |

Dec-05-23
 | | perfidious: <edroche1111>, Bet David would if he could. Not sure I can, but certainly will if at all possible. On a side note: did you play in western Mass in the mid-late 1970s? If so, we met in the Eastfield Mall Open at Springfield in spring 1977. You were 1900+ then and I managed to win vs your Gruenfeld in the 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Bg5 line. |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: Buckets of ______!
David was a good person, I counted him as a friend. (We even chatted on the phone a few times when I lived at Chapin's Landing.) I found his POTD ... indeed, ALL his game collections ... to be invaluable!!!!!! I had a minor stroke in 2019. I could not remember his rating so I looked him up on the USCF website. It says on his player profile that: "This player is deceased." I literally think I went into shock. I ran into the bathroom fearing I might ... you know. What a freaking crummy way to find out that I had lost a friend and the CG group had lost one of our most valuable contributors! RIP David W. Moody |
|
Oct-19-24 | | Resignation Trap: <LIFE Master AJ>: I was a frequent opponent and traveling companion to David for many years. He had diabetes and kidney disease in his later years. Some of the best years and tournaments of my life were spent with him. For many years, he depended on other chess players for transportation in order to attend tournaments. He did not drive his own car until the mid 1980s.
His favorite tournament every year was the U.S. Open, and in 1992, it actually took place in his home town of Dearborn, MI. His documentation of various U.S. Open tournaments is extensive here on www.chessgames.com. |

Nov-08-24
 | | Check It Out: Happy birthday, <Phony Benoni>, you are missed. |
|
Nov-08-24 | | stone free or die: Nice of you to remember him <CIO>. Of course I second the sentiment. Some of the most productive periods of the Bistro were guided by his steady, wise and humble leadership. |
|
Nov-08-24
 | | WannaBe: May I have your attention, please?
May I have your attention, please?
Will the real Benoni please stand up?
I repeat, will the real Benoni please stand up?
We're gonna have a problem here |
|
Nov-08-24
 | | FSR: <Phony Benoni> was a sterling human being and a great contributor to this site. Him being honored as POTD is long overdue. |
|
Nov-08-24
 | | perfidious: If David was never accorded the honour of <Player of the Day> till now, I too am pleased to see this. My wish is that it would have taken place while he was alive. |
