Phony Benoni: <vonKrolock> That second problem is devilishly difficult to visualize. Looks like Pollock was the guy who gave everybody headaches down at the club with his crazy problems.

I think it's 1.Nd6, but I'm still not completely sure.

Nov-24-10  bengalcat47: FSR "Pollock is a fish" It should be noted that Pollock had wins against Pillsbury and Tarrasch during his career, as well as also having had success against opponents such as H.E. Bird and I. Gunsberg.

GrahamClayton: Here is a nice finish from Pollock:

Hvidenstahl-Pollock, London, 1885:

Pollock looks to be in a bit of trouble - both his Rook and Queen are attacked. Pollock ignores the attacks and plays 1...♗xb1! 2. gxh4 ♖xf3 3. ♖xf3 ♘f2+ 4. ♖xf2 ♗e4+ 5. ♖g2 ♖xg2 6. ♘c3 ♖xd2+ 0-1

I was making a silly joke - pollock is a kind of fish, as my Wikipedia cite indicated. No player who played at Hastings 1895, and did respectably, as Pollock did, could be a weak player. From what I have read of Pollock, he was a charming and beloved person, and capable of playing great chess.

May-09-14  ljfyffe: On his way to Hastings: Pollock-Charles Harding,
Pollock-John Desoyres, John Desoyres-Pollock- Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, 1895 (St. John Globe) in "Last of the Nineteenth Century Champions of Saint John", EN PASSANT, NO. 144, JUNE,1997 (by Larry Fyffe).)
May-09-14  ljfyffe: Pollock-C.E. Harding 1895 Saint John : 1e4 e5 2f4 exf4 3Nf3 g5 4h4 g4 5Ng5 d5 6d4 h6 7Nxf7 Kxf7 8Bxg4 Be7 9Nc3 Nf6 10e5 Nh5 11Bd3 Rf812o-o Kg7 13Qd2 Nxf4 14Rxf4 Rxf4 15Qxf4 Bxf4 16Rf1 Be6 17 Nxd5 Bxd5 18Qf5 Qg8 19Qg6+ 1-0. Likely a simul.
May-09-14  PhilFeeley: <ljfyffe> Something's wrong. If 15. Qxf4 Bxf4 then how can 18. Qf5 and 19. Qg6+?
May-10-14  ljfyffe: 8Bxf4 Be7 and 15Qxf4 Bxh4....my errors. Thanks for pointing them out , Phil.
May-11-14  ljfyffe: Bear with me. I'm somewhat computer illiterate.Essentially Gutenberg and descriptive notation. Here's another simul: Pollock (from Montreal) vs Prof. W. Hanburg (from Musquash, NB). Played in Saint John, July, 1895: 1e4 e5 2Nf3 Nc6 3Bc4 Bc5 4b4 Bb6 5b5 Na5 6Nxe5 Qf67Bxf7+ Kd8 8d4 d6 9Bxg8 Rxg8 10Bg5 Qxg5 11Nf7+ Ke7 12Nxg5 1-0. Perhaps the good professor was a little tired having walked the 18 miles to the city just to get the chance to play the esteemed WHK Pollock.
May-11-14  PhilFeeley: <ljfyffe> Maybe the Chess Canada website has more of these? See: http://www.chess.ca/pgn-downloads
May-12-14  ljfyffe: See another Pollock posted under Zukertort's games of chess.
