JAN HEIN DONNER
(born Jul-06-1927, died Nov-27-1988, 61 years old) Netherlands
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Johannes Hendrikus Donner was born in The Hague. He was a three-time Dutch Champion (1954, 1957, and 1958). FIDE awarded him the Grandmaster title in 1959. He first gained international notice by winning Hoogovens (1950) a point ahead of Max Euwe and Nicolas Rossolimo. He also won Hoogovens (1963), Venice (1967) (scoring 11-2 and finishing a point ahead of then-World Champion Tigran Petrosian), and the Amsterdam IBM tournament in 1965. At Oegstgeest (1970) he placed second behind only Boris Spassky, and ahead of Mikhail Botvinnik and Bent Larsen. A prolific chess writer in his own country, he produced a huge body of work with his essays, bulletins, and newspaper columns. Much of his work is collected in the book "The King."

On August 24, 1983, Donner suffered a stroke, after which he was confined to a nursing home. He died on November 27, 1988.

Oct-22-05  Eastfrisian: People, who have not been offended by Donner, must have been not important. From an article of Dr. Helmut Pfleger.
Dec-31-05  Resignation Trap: Venice 1967 was one of Donner's finest moments, when he finished first with a score of 11/13. He himself spoiled the effects when he spoke on Dutch television about the first prize: a large golden gondola with twelve jewels.

"I donate it to the Medical Committee Viet Nam. They will buy medicine for it, but I don't mind if it is a machine gun, because the Americans have to be kicked out of Viet Nam!" he exclaimed. A scandal was born. He lost his chess column in Elseviers Weekblad immediately. Donner never got his prize.

Jan-08-06  The hachett man: Good News!

Donners book The King:Chess pieces is going to be released in paperback in June 2006. Previously it was only published in a limited hard back edition which was difficult to find and very expensive. Now many more people can read a selection of his humourous writings on every aspect of chess. He was a very much loved man and popular chess writer. We need more chess columinsts like Hein Donner in our newspapers! Who has the best chess column these days can anyone compete with his output?

I think he must have been excellent entertaining company! he was a good friend of Bent Larsen for many years.

korchnoi disliked donner because he thought he was not serious and also a communist sympathiser who hadnt thought his support through carefully enough

donner was incredibly amusing-his old foe ree is probably the greatest chess stylist writing at the moment tho his last few efforts have seemed a bit flat and ill informed to me--something has gone out of them --tho on top form he is world class-i dont know what it is about the dutch and the irish but they often write the best english--see also swift shaw beckett joyce yeats and others--

Jun-12-06  Luvnlife34: Jan Hein Donner's Biography and "Notable Games" both need to be updated to reflect his win over Robert James Fischer at Varn Ol, Final Round 6, 1962. Thanks.

Dec-06-06  Caissanist: I believe that Donner was also the first person to make the observation that the American preference for poker (over chess) is clearly reflected in our foreign policy. He said this in 1972.

That's right. I've met him a few times, and he was always very friendly and polite to me.

In the context of this column this novelty cannot be considered at length. Fot Teiresias I refer to: Harry Mulisch, <Voer voor psychologen>, Amsterdam, 1961, and a possible identity of Judas is dealt with in Nils Runeberg, <Dem hemlige Frälsaren>, Stockholm, 1909.

STALEMATE

Jul-06-07  nescio: "There was something in Mr. Donner's towering appearance that attracted irresistible attention. He was a figure one would least expect to encounter at a chess tournament. Much more likely one could see him as presiding judge of a court, or delivering a philosophy lecture, or in Parliament, depending on the garment he would be wearing. In this tournament he chose an informal open sport shirt.

At the first rounds of the tournament, Mr. Donner showed tremendous mastery and tenacity, forcing his frustrated opponents to call him a nut impossible to crack. Draw, draw, draw, one draw following another, building a suspence generally not associated with drawing games. However, things began to change with his losses. None of his many friends liked it. Some of the youngsters probably to camouflage their disappointment made silly jokes about Mr. Donner's shirt while more serious people wished that his bad luck would inspire someone to write a treatise on brilliant games which ended in losses.

Everyone gasped as Mr. Donner appeared at the final round in a marvelous new shirt.

The old discarded one was found in the hall under a table and is now kept in Los Angeles as a souvenir of a witty and unforgettable man.

There is an inscription: Here rests a shirt of Mr. Donner. A man of charm, skill and honor."

-- Gregor Piatigorsky in the introduction to the Santa Monica 1966 tournament book

Wat zwart dwingt e5 te kiezen;
Koning e3, e4; och gut:
Hij zet zijn eerste stuk en prise.

Die kans laat ik niet onbenut;
Dame h4; ik pak mijn biezen
En Donner, die hier moed uit put,
Speelt paard e7, een bêtise,

Want ik sprak: "Pat", Jan Hein riep "Kut!"
En zo werd het toch nog remise.

For those unfortunates who have no ear for good poetry, here's a prosaic translation:

Jul-20-07  whiteshark: In 1968 Donner noted:

<However painful it may be, we must not shrink from the truth: <women cannot play chess>. And, if you ask me, they will never learn to play chess. ... And why can"t they play chess? After more than twenty-two years of pure scientific research, I think I have found an explanation. It is a well-known fact that a woman is superior to a man. Physically she is stronger. With her endless patience she will win, in the end, the everlasting battle of the sexes. She can think more logically... She has a far better memory... In everything a woman is superior to a man, but she misses one thing: <intuition>.>

True.

Jul-20-07  RookFile: Somebody should explain this to the Polgars.
Jul-20-07  achieve: It's satire from top to bottom but that's how he was -- Donner did look down on women in a way.
Jul-20-07  whiteshark: <<Rookfile>

This is what Donner has to say about the subject, four years later:

<The difference between the sexes in chess is remarkably big, but in my opinion no bigger than in any other cultural activity. Women can not play chess, like they can not paint, nor write literature, nor compose music, nor be a philosopher. In fact, there is nothing thought or done by a woman, that is worth noticing. So chess is not to blame. But what is? First of all a woman is far more stupid than a man. And, a woman is not at all capable to amuse herself.>

Thereby keeping a straight face is a hard nut to crack...> ;D

Aug-01-07  nescio: And again, in De Volkskrant, 1977:
