May-16-09 | | WhiteRook48: Happy birthday! |
|
Dec-27-09 | | ozmikey: His "Diary of a Chess Master" chapter in that book he co-authored with Lessing is still an absolute classic, a real insight into the day-to-day world of professional tournament chess from the point of view of someone just outside the top echelon. I even downloaded a file of the games from Netanya 1973 so as to follow Saidy's "story" a bit better! The rest of that book ain't bad either, especially Lessing's chapter on coffeehouse chess. |
|
May-07-10 | | whiteshark: "What if one took a minor Capablanca, grafted onto him a strong will to win, and added all the interim opening knowledge as elaborated by the Soviet school? Some would posit, an invincible chess machine. But no - one would have merely a studious Capablanca who tried harder. Of such stuff, heroes today cannot be made." -- Anthony Saidy (on Karpov) |
|
May-16-10 | | wordfunph: Anthony Saidy: Do you think chess will be played in the moon? Mikhail Tal: Yes. But I am afraid there will also be FIDE in the moon. |
|
Jan-20-11 | | Whitehat1963: In his book The March of Chess Ideas, Saidy used chapter titles like "The Joy of Invention" and "The Psychology of Magic" to characterize the playing styles of specific players (Bronstein and Tal in the above examples.) I wonder, if we were to update his book today, what titles might we come up with to characterize the following players: Kasparov
Karpov
Anand
Kramnik
Ivanchuk
Topalov
Carlsen
Aronian
Shirov
Leko
Nakamura
Polgar
Morozevich
Rybka 4 |
|
May-16-11 | | WhiteRook48: I don't think NASA would spend enough money to play chess on the moon. |
|
Nov-06-11 | | Karpova: C.N. 7345
About 'Bobby Fischer Against the World' (Liz Garbus, 2011) where chess history "experts" are interviewed on the topic of insanity: <Anthony Saidy: ‘Victor Korchnoi claimed to have played a match with a dead man and he even provided the moves.’ Asa Hoffmann: ‘Rubinstein jumped out of the window because the fly was after him.’ Anthony Saidy: ‘Steinitz in late life thought he was playing chess by wireless with God Almighty – and had the better of God Almighty.’ Asa Hoffmann: ‘Carlos Torre took all his clothes off on a bus.’> Final remark from Edward Winter:
<And since the theme is insanity, an uncomfortable question arises: can such groundless public denigration of Steinitz and others be considered the conduct of a rational human being?> Link: http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/... |

Aug-14-12 | | Cemoblanca: "He is a prodigious book collector and possesses an enormous library on many subjects, including one of the largest privately owned collections of chess books in the United States." I am terribly jealous & at the same time I am ready to adopt you Mr. Saidy! :D |
|
Oct-17-12 | | PinnedPiece: Recently I watched "Bobby Fischer against The World" (checked out from the library) and was pleased to see that many of the folks who knew and played Fischer, were the storytellers in the documentary. Dr. Saidy was a major feature of the film, in my judgement, and I really began to enjoy those times when he explained who and what Bobby Fischer was....his genius, his flaws, his collapse. The documentary spends a lot of time on the 1972 Spassky match, which Saidy was very involved in. Larry Evans also provides many insights.

May-17-13 | | RookFile: <Whitehat1963: what titles might we come up with to characterize the following players: > Don't know about the others, but a good one for Karpov would be "Just win, baby". |

Jun-23-14 | | WJW147: It takes excellent craftsmen, such as the good doctor, to make great craftsmen such as Alekhine and Morphy. They crafted their skills by playing "outside the box" against good players and the excellent craftsmen of Dr Saidy's ilk.
(RJF 1972)
Thanks to you, Doctor Anthony Saidy. |
