Jun-06-06  cotdt: the armenians gangsters are everywhere, even here in Los Angeles. looks like mr. gormally will be harassed for the rest of his life, i feel sorry for the poor english GM.

Jun-06-06  notsodeepthought: <Jafar219: <<Ezzy> Manchester produce the best music and bands in the world> It is not right. The best music and bands come from Finland.> That's right - LORDI rules! (well, actually that's the only band I know from Finland).
Jun-06-06  Jafar219: These are the finnish bands I know

Nightwish,Sonata Arctica,Amorphis,Children of Bodom,HIM,Norther,Lordi,Waltari,Stratovarius,Apocalypt- ica and Throne of Chaos(TOC).

Jun-06-06  Ziggurat: <That's right - LORDI rules! (well, actually that's the only band I know from Finland).> Then you should check out Finntroll as well :-)
Jun-06-06  jamesmaskell: Well, its got international attention now. Gormally hit Aronian and the Armenians hit him back. I say thats it now., Its even. Back to the chess.

Lordi...hmmm...I remember coming across their name just before Eurovision and after recognising it and knowing the style of music declared to a local football fan site that there was absolutely no way Lordi would win. Its simply not mainstream enough. Imagine the look on my face when I was proved wrong. My forfeit is a naked run through a local shopping centre. Date TBA...

Jun-06-06  whiskeyrebel: As a happy drunk I'm disgusted by Gormally giving us drinkers a bad name. What a big baby he is...sulking over some perceived internet romance at his age. "Whaaah"...he makes me sick.

My exact thoughts.

Even here in LA? That's the Armenian capital of the USA, you're making it sound like LA is some backwater dump.
Jun-06-06  SnoopDogg: <Even here in LA? That's the Armenian capital of the USA, you're making it sound like LA is some backwater dump.>

No kidding. No wonder System of a Down came from LA. All of them are Armenian.

Here's a quote from the article:
<Gormally apparently attacked Aronian after he saw him dancing with Arianne Caoili, an attractive 19-year-old Australian known as "the Anna Kournikova of chess".>

Expect a defamation lawsuit to be filed by Anna Kournikova against the Telegraph any minute. I mean, Caoili is cute, but any comparison with Kournikova is laughable.

Jun-07-06  cotdt: I heard Morozevich also punched Aronian over the same girl, from multiple sources.

Anyway, what is odd is that all the national newspapers here are reporting about this Gormally-Aronian incident, while there is no mention at all about the Olympiad itself, where the best chess players from over 150 nations come to play! Does the national public care a lot more about these incidences than good old chess?

Jun-07-06  mack: 'Intellectual despair results not in inertia or dreams but in violence' - Georges Bataille

This is a wonderful story, and can only be good publicity for the chess in my eyes; the Times devoted all of page 3 to it (but still felt the need to include that Danny lives with his parents). Malcolm Pein was having a chuckle about it today in the Chess shop.

Jun-07-06  MUG: <Anyway, what is odd is that all the national newspapers here are reporting about this Gormally-Aronian incident, while there is no mention at all about the Olympiad itself...>

Not odd at all where the general press is concerned! Stories of Love, jealousy and violence are in, Chess Olympiads are most definitely out! But I expect this story is attractive just for the comedy headline value "Grandmasters fight over Queen of chess" etc. etc. :-)

Jun-07-06  rover: <Does the national public care a lot more about these incidences than good old chess?>

Is that a trick question?

Jun-08-06  netlava: Poor Gormally will be the brunt of jokes for the rest of his chess career. Especially after the way newspapers described him e.g. "lives at home with his parents, having an email relationship, attacked by a group of Armenians, etc." LOL

LIFE Master AJ: << Newspapers reporting on 'Gormallygate' since the Times broke the story yesterday include the Daily Telegraph of London, and the Phillipine newspapers, Sun Star, and Manila Standard. On the other hand, a senior chess administrator has commented - 'Danny punched somebody during a dance. Subsequently he decided it was best to return home. A very minor incident.' >>

Jun-08-06  notsodeepthought: <Ziggurat: <That's right - LORDI rules! (well, actually that's the only band I know from Finland).> Then you should check out Finntroll as well :-)> I did - I found a recording of "Trollhammeren" and it didn't sound too bad (though I prefer Lordi). But, aside from superficial similarities in the choreography, the music is quite different. Lordi could be called a melodic hard rock band (assuming that "melodic" and "hard rock" belong in a sentence that doesn't contain an odd number of negatives). "Trollhammeren" instead is basically instrumental, with certain passages reminding me of Rick Wakeman (I'm sticking my neck out on this one, Wakeman and/or "Yes" fans will be after my blood, but I'm just talking first impressions of the Finntroll song that somehow evoked old memories of Rick Wakeman's wizardry in the "Six Wives of Henry VIII" recording).
Jun-08-06  babakova: Nightwish are from Finland, too. They are,in my humble opinion, much better than Lordi.
Jun-08-06  Jafar219: <babakova> Yes! you are right. Nightwish is amazing band. But my favourite finnish band is Sonata Arctica.<notsodeepthought> check out Sonata Arctica songs `Last drop fall` and `Letter to Dana`.
Jun-08-06  kellmano: Love the last parargaph of the times article:

Mr Gormally, 30, a professional player, declined to comment from his home, where he lives with his parents. On asked why he had been sent home, he replied: “It’s personal. It’s nothing to do with you.”

Have that Gormally! Was there any need to mention he was 30 and living with his parents? Poor guy.

Jun-08-06  Stevens: I think it's all one big publicity stunt. Next he'll be doing "celebrity" x factor or even "grandmaster chef"?

joking of course. amazing the publicity this has got really.
