Jun-06-05 | | BobMtheIdiot: I was on that wt harvey website ( www.wtharvey.com) and was going through some tactics. I found it interesting that I had an easier time with Lev's problems then Nakamura's. Got me thinking..
1. Lev's problems have been around some time and you are probably more likely to see those patterns. 2. Lev's problems are easier b/c Nakamura is the more creative player. BTW, the book _Freakonomics_ rocks. |

Jun-23-05 | | Knight13: "Nothing is dearer to a chess player's heart than his rating. Well, of course everyone knows he's under-rated, but his rating, its ups and downs, however miniscule, are his ego's stock-market report." --- Lev Alburt
This quote is pretty good. It won the Quote of the Day, 6/23/05! |

Jun-23-05 | | Caissanist: Hmm, although the USCF is presumably against using "drugs" to increase one's performance, they appear to be in favor of using "supplements". http://susanpolgar.blogspot.com/200... |

Jun-23-05 | | Knight13: Using drugs to make you a better player? That's ridiculous! Not possible. I don't believe it. That's like using a drug that lets you jump 7 feet high in the air! |

Jun-23-05 | | admiralnemo: <knight13> depends on the drug. |

Sometimes the effects aren't what you'd expect, but they are still helpful. For example: Beta blockers stop adrenaline, which is the cause of many physical manifestations of nervousness. Musicians and actors use them all the time to improve performance. I'd think you'd have a big advantage in an important match if you weren't nervous at all and your opponent was. |

Jul-22-05 | | mahmoudkubba: So what about from 1996-2005 is he still a chess player or what happened really?? |
|
Jul-22-05 | | mahmoudkubba: <Knight13>: I saw the word <drugs> near yr name, UC chess is one of the sport games that the player can take activators not drugs and the referee can't say any thing especially in blitzes and some players really as far as i know suffer lately from such activiators and developers of mind thinking!! |
|
Jul-22-05 | | deshad: <mahmoudkubba>: Alburt is a coach and writes chess books now. His book Pirc Alert (co-written with Alex Chernin) has probably the best format of any chess book I've ever seen. |

Jul-22-05 | | pazzed paun: has anyone taken lessons from lev alburt? |
|

 | | Sneaky: I got a lesson in one of his simuls. I was lost in 11 moves, played a few more moves to pursue an absurd "pure desperation attack" then promptly resigned. |

Mar-21-06 | | pazzed paun: has anybody memorised the 300 postions in his pocket training guide? did your rating go up? |

 | | WannaBe: <pazzed paun> Just started on the book, up to puzzle numbered 49. Can't say my rating has improved (Haven't played anyone yet! =), but I like the (free) book. Come to think of it, I like to share some of puzzle with fellow CG.com members (Once every so often). So... Without further delay... Aug-13-06 | | tTinker: If you study enough, you'll see this several times and look at it like an every day snack. It's pretty easy. To get better at chess, you study endings, tactics, and whole master games for starts. Then go onto the other exotic things. As for the Karpov, Fischer debate. Fischer pursues his attacks and basically what he wants in his games more than many other players. Karpov does have that solid defense aura about him, so I would give a game or two more to Fischer since it is known that defending is harder than attacking, especially if Fischer is white-the color that can usually claim a draw with a thought out perpetual check in one of the variations. The Fischer Kasparov battle would be a real spectacle. Under what other players name is he debate going on about that? |

Aug-21-06 | | think: All of GM Alburt's notable games are with him playing black. Does anyone know if he has a unusually high black winning percentage like I heard Capa has? |
|
Aug-21-06 | | Albertan: Hi Think. According to my chessbase database, Alburt wins or draws 49% of his games with black. In comparison, Capablanca won or drew 67% of his games with black. |

Aug-21-06 | | Castle In The Sky: I've bought four of Alburt's instructional series books and have found them to be excellent. The best is "Just the Facts" Endgame book, which is probably the best endgame primer I have read. It has over 500 diagrams and is very user friendly. |
