Mar-01-05 | | Whitehat1963: Andersson was player of the day only 15 days ago. What's up with that? |
Mar-01-05 | | aw1988: We all love Ulf. |
Mar-01-05
 | | IMlday: Back at Wijk aan Zee, 1970 Ulf and I were the juniors in the reserve section which he won easily. Between rounds we worked as a foosball team at the table game, evolving a tricky strategy for when the goalie has the ball. Sufficient slow motion maneuvering with the forwards could give the goalie a clear direct shot on the opponents goal. We scored a lot like that. |
Mar-01-05 | | Najkid: Ulf Andersson was a great asset to chess and still is he was an unbelievable tactician and played some of the best game ever seen, however my favourite for all-out excitement is Mikhail Tal he was the first player at that level to ever do anything so ridiculous as to go into a 50-50 endgame when he had forced mate in three!!Apparently it wasn't very pleasing from his aesthetic point of view!! |
Mar-14-05 | | Volmac: Ulf himself once picked F Olafsson vs Ulf Andersson, 1972 as his most memorable game. |
Mar-14-05 | | MoonlitKnight: A typical Andersson game. His opponent fell asleep and lost on time. :-) |
Mar-14-05 | | Volmac: A most unfair description. The game was adjourned three times so the players had plenty of time to analyze it. Ulf could see the upcoming endgame structure (better for him) as early as move 14. |
Mar-17-05 | | MoonlitKnight: <Volmac> I know. It was just a joke to tease you Swedes. |
Apr-01-05 | | babakova: Det är lite synd att Ulf har gått i halvpension och mest spelar 1 min på ICC, vore soft med en publicitetsmatch mellan honom och Anatolij Karpov! |
Apr-01-05 | | hintza: <babakova> I understand the part about Ulf playing 1-minute games on the ICC, but what is this about Karpov? I know very little Swedish unfortunately. |
Apr-01-05 | | babakova: Ah Ill do it a bit more international; Maybe it could be nice to have Andersson play Karpov in some publicity match, for old times sake? |
Apr-01-05 | | hintza: <babakova> Hej, och tack! That is practically as far as my Swedish goes!
It would be a nice match, yes. |
Apr-08-05 | | Volmac: Another idea would be a team match 3 rounds with Karpov, Timman and Andersson (they are all three born in 1951) vs Carlsen, Karjakin and Nakamura (the future champions according to Kasparov). |
Apr-22-05 | | babakova: That is actually quite interesting! If I were to predict the final standings : 1.Nakamura 2.Karpov 3.Karjakin 4.Timman 5.Andersson 6.Carlsen. I figured Andersson would probably draw and lose some game and uhm... Im not sure if Timman and Carlsen should switch place, depends on form. |
Apr-24-05 | | Karpova: <babakova>
final standings:
1.karpov
2.nakamura
3.karjakin
4.timman
5.carlsen
6.andersson |
Apr-24-05 | | babakova: I dont think Andersson would take last place, he is simply too solid and any of the other players is very likely to produce a disastrous result, hence finishing below Uffe. |
Apr-25-05 | | Karpova: <babakova: I figured Andersson would probably draw and lose some game> this is enough to end up last place. |
Apr-25-05 | | babakova: I changed my mind. All play all once, 5 rounds: 1. Nakamura 4 points 2.Karpov 3 points 3.Timman 3 points 4.Karjakin 2 points 5.Andersson 2 points 6.Carlsen 0.5 points. |
Jun-28-05 | | Appaz: 9/9 draws for Andersson in Warsaw.
A Leko-score is within reach!
Jun-28-05 | | Appaz: ...only to spoil it all by beating Lopez Martinez Josep Manuel. Andersson is +1 with 3 rounds to go, and could end up with a very decent result. Some players may be desperate to win at the end of the tournament, trying to qualify, and pushing hard against Uffe may easily backfire. |
Jun-28-05 | | horror: This has anything to do with the tournament in Warsaw, but Ulf has actually LOST one correspondence game (against Hans-Marcus Elwert, ranked #6 in the world): QUEEN’SGAMBITDECLINED [D56]

Jun-28-05 | | Appaz: Quite high correspondence rating, so this must one of his few losses.
How unfair of you!
:) |

Jun-29-05 | | suenteus po 147: <acirce> & others: Are there any particularly beautiful or fascinating draws by Andersson here in the database? I want to spend some time adding to my draw collection and since Andersson has so many draws I was figuring he would have some especially pretty or amazing ones. Any help and suggestions are greatly appreciated! |

Jun-29-05
 | | keypusher: Kasparov vs Ulf Andersson, 1981 is a possibility. See notes <acirce> attached to the game, too. |
Jun-29-05
 | | keypusher: Here is another.
Beliavsky vs Ulf Andersson, 1982
After 25 moves it looks like Andersson is about to get mated. He escapes into a double-rook + opposite color bishop ending a pawn down, but thereafter so completely outplays Beliavsky that white is happy to give two pawns back! But Andersson is unable to win, though the game lasts over 100 moves. Beliavsky and Andersson were contenders for the second qualifying spot at this interzonal (Kasparov easily got the first spot). Had Andersson managed to win this game, he rather than Beliavsky might have reached the candidates matches. |
