VIACHESLAV RAGOZIN
(born Oct-08-1908, died Mar-11-1962, 53 years old) Russia
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Viacheslav Vasiliyevich Ragozin was born in St. Petersburg. FIDE awarded him the GM title in 1950, and the GMC title in 1959 when he won the 2nd Correspondence World Championship (1956) - (1959). He won the Leningrad Championship in 1936 [rusbase-1] and 1945 [rusbase-2]. He played Board 8 (out of 10) against Herbert Seidman in the historic USA-USSR radio match in September 1945, beating Herbert Seidman 2-0.

He was for many years the sparring partner of Mikhail Botvinnik and contributed significantly to his successes. He worked actively for FIDE (the World Chess Federation), edited Shakhmaty v SSSR magazine and wrote an excellent book on the 1st Botvinnik - Tal Match in 1960.

Ragozin died in Moscow in 1962 whilst compiling Izbrannye Partii Ragozina, a collection of his own games. His friends completed the book under the editorship of M. Beilin and published in 1964.

The Ragozin Defense (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 d5 4.Nc3 Bb4), regarded as one of the soundest defenses to 1.d4, is named for him.

Jan-30-04  ughaibu: As Ragozin was probably the strongest correspondence champion as far as over the board play goes and was one of the most interesting of strong over the board players he to me would be the natural candidate for best ever correspondence player but in fact of his winning games in the 2nd championship there are only two that I really like: V Bergraser vs Ragozin, 1956 J Jezek vs Ragozin, 1956
Jan-30-04  Benzol: In a partnership that was mutually beneficial Ragozin helped Botvinnik become World Champion.
Mar-02-04  shr0pshire: Ragozin was the second world champion of the world!

May-04-04  barrister: So this is the guy who escaped from the jaws of a Winawer French defeat and left poor Lillienthal licking himself LOL.
May-24-04  meloncio: <chessgames.com> May I inquire discreetly when the games Ragozin-S.Mudrov (1928) and Ragozin-A.Sokolsky (1954) will be ready?

I uploaded it three weeks ago, more or less, and I need both to finish my collection. The Ragozin Fans Club would be grateful and happy. ;-))

May-25-04  meloncio: <chessgames.com> Thank you very much. The collection "Ragozin's Selected Games", from the Botvinnik's book, is now finished.

Feb-24-06  blingice: <Benzol> You are a endless database of births and deaths.
Feb-25-06  Benzol: <blingice> Thanks. It took something like seven months working practically everyday but I think the end product was worthwhile. However, it must be remembered that I was not working totally alone and I extend my heartfelt thanks to the other contributors.

BIDMONFA is lucky in a way that a lot of the spade work has already been done for him.

Feb-25-06  Gypsy: <Benzol> I second <blingice> and thank you for your efforts!
Feb-25-06  Benzol: <Gypsy> Many thanks mate. One of my future hopes is that <Resignation Trap> and <Eastfrisian> and yourself get put onto the administrators list.

:)

Thanks <keypusher>. I deleted my post with this faulty link. Usually I check the links before submittung the post. But this time it was only the wikipedia link, for some reason.

Dec-06-08  dramas79: <Benzol: In a partnership that was mutually beneficial Ragozin helped Botvinnik become World Champion.> Didn't Botvinnik implicitly accuce Ragozin of leaking preparation to Smyslov at some point in time?
