??? BIOGRAPHY ???

Outside of chess, I also like to watch sports (who doesn't), and even play sports (even though I'm not great at it). Baseball is by far my favourite sport.

??? GAME COLLECTIONS ???

Penguincw's Game Collections

To view all my collections, see here: Game Collection: 0: Table of Contents.

??? CHESS PUZZLES ???

Here are some chess puzzles I composed. I'm not a very strong composer, but they should be fun to solve nevertheless. However, since my forum won't always be open, I decided to use one of my game collections for that purpose:

Game Collection: Chess Puzzles

Here's a sample:

White to move, mate in three

??? ACHIEVEMENTS ???

Here's my short list of achievements on this site (other than achievements relating to the prediction contests, which are listed further below):

966th user to open up their forum.

Became the 45th user to reach 13,000 posts (unofficial).

Only the 2nd user (honour shared with 7 other users) to win a membership from the Santa Claus draw twice.

In the ChessBookie Game, finished first in the Championship 2015 preseason with 1727 cbs, 174 cbs ahead of 2nd place. Also, in the Fall 2014 preseason, I finished in 2nd with 1418 cbs, just 40 cbs behind first at the last known update.

4th user, and 3rd overall (after <SwitchingQuylthulg> (x2), <wordfunph> and <Annie K.>) to run the ChessBookie Game.

At the 2016 Caissar Awards, I was nominated and won the "Most Helpful" award for 2015.

In Spring 2016, I became the 172nd user to qualify for the Championship Leg in the ChessBookie Game, finishing in 10th place with 4,204 cbs. (fact-checking needed)

??? PREDICTION CONTESTS ???

I like competing in the prediction contests, and so far, have won these medals (along with the rank listed):

<Golden Executive>

♔♔♔♕♕♕♕♖♖♖♖♖♖♖ (3 gold, 4 silver, 7 bronze; 23rd)

<chessmoron> (hosted by <OhioChessFan>) ♔♔♔♔♔♔♔♔♔♔♘♘♘♘♘♘♘♘♘♘♘♘♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗♗ (10 gold, 12 silver, 22 bronze; 10th)

<Golden Executive>'s Games Prediction Contest: User: Golden Executive

<chessmoron>'s Moves Prediction Contest (hosted by <OhioChessFan>): User: OhioChessFan

<lostemperor>'s Final Standings Prediction Contest: User: lostemperor

Other Notable Achievements:

Only user to ever win a quadruple crown (London Chess Classic 2011) in the Moves Prediction Contest (or any contest for that matter).

Only user to ever win a Betting title crown in the Games Prediction Contest, and defend it the very next year, same tournament (Tata Steel 2014 & 2015).

First user to ever win a gold medal in each of the 3 contests from the same tournament (Tata Steel 2015).

The 4th user to have won at least 3 golds in 3 different contests (after <chessmoron>, <lostemperor> and <SwitchingQuylthulg>). Members of this club are unofficially considered to be "grandmasters" of the prediction contests.

For the 7th consecutive year (2011-2017), I have won at least one gold medal in one of the contests. I am one of just 6 active users to have done so, the others being <chessmoron>, <cromat>, <lostemperor>, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <WinKing>.

??? NOTABLE POSTS ???

I've made over 13,000 posts, but not all posts are created equally. In fact, most of them don't have too much value, but here are some of my best posts:

Probably my most "viral" post to date (introducing the now defunct Chessgames Playing Zone The Kibitzer's Café

Probably the first <on the internet> to notice the Original Six sweep the Tampa Bay Lightning were going through during the Stanley Cup playoffs, 2015: Mating Net chessforum.

More posts will be added as time progresses.

Here are some of my favourite posts by <other users> around the site (no reason given to some):

  Penguincw: < Happy Canada's Day >

*facepalm*

It's actually just "Canada Day". :| At least I didn't get the number wrong (I think); that's the part I typically mess up during birthdays.

Anyway, Happy 4th of July to all the Americans on this site. You know, if I had to live anywhere in the world (that's not Canada), I'd choose the United States (probably the country most like Canada). As for where specifically, Philadelphia and St. Louis have some good sports team, while Florida seems to be the dream location (unless it's Hurricane season). However, I think Boston would be the ideal city for me (not sure about the West Coast). (not going to look on this topic deeply)

In other news, 25 pages on my forum it is! :)

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Penguincw: I have to say though, it's pretty nerve racking paying off a bet, even though the results are right in front of you.>

The worst is when line 1 is "0", line 2 is "1", line 3 is "2" and line 4 is "3". It's so easy to get confused :-)

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Penguincw> Tip: if you link to a post (e.g. Chessgames Bookie chessforum) and that link has "kpage" in it, it will only work for people with ignore lists similar to yours. (The link above is the link from Friendly Tournament: WINNER - if I click it, it leads me to a blank page, not your post.)

Links without "kpage" in them (e.g. Chessgames Bookie chessforum (kibitz #8656)) will work for everybody, regardless of who they have on their ignore lists. There are several ways of getting such links; right-clicking the post's timestamp and selecting "copy link" is the simplest way.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <P.P.S. <Switch>, for the draw no bet, I accidently put in the dash, which put in a 3rd option. How do I get rid of an extra line without deleting the whole bet? :P>

You don't :)

If nobody's placed any bets yet, deleting everything is the cleanest option. Refunding the extra line like you did also works (and is the best approach if somebody's placed a bet already); I would rename the line to be refunded to something like "-----" to make it extra-clear it's a no-line, but I suppose that's not really necessary.

Watch out for stray dashes with "draw no bet" and "over/under" markets in particular. (With "first move" bets the dash is not a problem, since the "first-move" bet type overrides the dash, and even if you forget to select the "first-move" bet type you can fix things easily by renaming lines without having to delete any.)

Good luck for the Summer Leg!

Jul-11-15  Golden Executive: Excellent performance as a bookie in the Pre-season <Penguin>. I am sure everything is going to be fine in the Summer Leg. Have fun and good luck!

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Penguincw> Are you intentionally calling most Chinese players by their given names rather than family names?

(Incidentally, Sevian is an ethnic Armenian.)

Penguincw: <Switch: Are you intentionally calling most Chinese players by their given names rather than family names? >

Not sure what you're asking, but I'll see if these examples explain your question:

For China - Russia Match R4: Svidler - Shanglei, I call him "Shanglei".

For China - Russia Match R4: Wei Yi - Dubov, I call him "Wei Yi".

You might be asking why sometimes I call them by one name, and sometimes their full name. The reason for that is preference (I do it if I think it looks better).

Or maybe you're trying to say something else. For example, for "Lu Shanglei", I assume "Lu" is the first name, while "Shanglei" is the last name. Is it like that, or is it the other way around (basically, if you had to place one name, what would it be).

< (Incidentally, Sevian is an ethnic Armenian.) >

Wow. When I see "USA" or the American flag next to them, I just assume they're American, and don't even bother to look up their background.

I removed the little note I placed at the bottom.

WannaBe: No, Lu is the Family Name (or last name), while Shanglei is the given name, or first name in Western culture.

Penguincw: From now on, I'll just display their whole name (first and last). Should be nothing wrong with that.

Thanks to both of you for letting me know (gonna make those corrections where I still can).

PS/BTW: Any other cultures/countries that have something similar to this?

That is probably the best approach, yes.

<PS/BTW: Any other cultures/countries that have something similar to this?>

Several; but Indian names ("the person should be referred to by the given name, Anand" -- Wikipedia) are the worst by a country mile. A zillion cultures, most with different approaches to naming; identifying which part of the name is which (and which part to use) is difficult; even FIDE gets Indian names completely wrong a lot.

Nice imaginative bets - keep it up! :)

Penguincw: Woo hoo, 11000th post on this site!

S Shankland vs J C Schroeder, 2015 (kibitz #1)

My unofficial records tell me I'm the 55th user to reach this milestone.

I also have a list of all my other milestone posts on this site above (Penguincw chessforum (kibitz #604)).

(none of the links probably work though since I got rid of the "kibitz #" thing)

Next milestone is 12K. Hoping to accomplish it this year.
