 | | OhioChessFan: Punk Carpenter got nothing. Which is a good thing or Widdle Tony might have vomited again. |
Aug-13-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Calm down, guys, calm down! This is just baseball we're talking about here, not something vitally important like chess. NL Central looks like it is going to be a good race anyway, even without the added spice of bad blood. In fact, looking at all the standings, only Texas has a substantial lead and you have to figure the Angels have a late charge in them. Everywhere else it's looking like a two-team race, but I'm not going to count Colorado out until they've been mathematically eliminated for a week. Hard to see Boston coming back without Youhklis. |
Aug-13-10 | | Jim Bartle: Lots of races all around, and I don't even keep up with any enthusiasm. I just don't see these as real pennant races, since they are never between two outstanding teams, just two good teams. (If they were two outstanding teams, the loser would be guaranteed the wild card.) Baseball lost a lot with the introduction of the third round of playoffs. It in effect eliminated the great pennant race. I think the last one was Atlanta-San Francisco in 1993, when the Braves came from pretty far back (after receiving a nice gift of a McGriff) to edge the Giants by one game, 103-102 in wins. A great race, the only year the Giants had the lineup of Will Clark-Barry Bonds-Matt Williams. |
Aug-13-10 | | A.G. Argent: Serious Jim? Not even enthused about the NL West race with SF right in the thick of it? I do relate a bit about the wild-card situation and how it sorta dilutes excitement but I've grown to kinda like it. Don't like having the World Series border on November though. |
Aug-13-10 | | Jim Bartle: No, the teams in races just aren't that strong any more, at least usually. Any really strong team runs away from its division. I thought the best setup ever was four divisions, six teams each, best of seven playoffs, best of seven Series. |
Aug-13-10
 | | Phony Benoni: It seems like parity is the goal of this era. This naturally increases the amount of mediocrity, but it also broadens fan interest, enriching the coffers. Personally, I like having the wild card. There are so many occasions when the luck of a single game separates two teams that I like to see the loser get a second chance. But, like A.G., I greatly dislike November baseball. Unfortunately, the only way to avoid it is for the owners to schedule more doubleheaders (which they won't), or the players to give up some of their off days (which they won't). Maybe we should play some doubleheaders if the schedule starts backing up during the playoffs. (HA!) |
Aug-13-10 | | Jim Bartle: Definitely, fewer off days during the playoffs and Series, especially during the first round when TV tries to shoehorn in games from four series. This could keep events moving along. Also, there shouldn't be a fixed date to start the World Series--it should start two days after the second team is determined. This is also better in the baseball sense, as it means teams have to use more starting pitchers. With so many off days a team with two good starters but not much else could use them in more than half the games, not at all like the regular season. A good example: the Giants. An average team overall, but with Lincecum, Cain and Zito going in most every game they could get hot and take it all. |
Aug-13-10
 | | OhioChessFan: I am surprised they don't do more day/night doubleheaders. The team doesn't lose the ticket revenue and the fans don't have to sit there 8 hours. |
Aug-14-10
 | | Phony Benoni: There are probably good economic reasons for the lack of day/night doubleheaders. If they're scheduled during the week, the club probably loses revenue on the day game. Sunday is a getaway day, and playing at night could screw up a team's travel schedule. And who wants to spend all day Saturday playing baseball? Not to mention overtime pay for stadium employees, the hassle of cleaning out the stands during games, or having to make two complete sets of concessions so that they remain fresh. And I'm sure that players and umpires don't care for them, and their contracts have something to say about the matter. Ernie Banks was incredibly atypical. |
Aug-14-10 | | Jim Bartle: I see the San Diego lineup today includes Tony Gwynn, Will Venable, Jerry Hairston Jr., and Nick Hundley. Three sons of major leaguers, and one unfortunately not related (Hundley). |

 | | Phony Benoni: I'm not sure who this announcer is, but if he ever makes the Hall of Fame this isn't going to be his signature call: http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/vid... |
Aug-15-10 | | just a kid: Gotta thank the Tigers for winning the series against the White Sox! |
Aug-16-10 | | Jim Bartle: The greatest call of all time is, of course, from Jerry Coleman: "Winfield goes back to the wall, he hits his head on the wall and it rolls off! It's rolling all the way back to second base. This is a terrible thing for the Padres." |
Aug-16-10 | | Jim Bartle: Johnny Damon gets a big ovation in his return to Yankee Stadium. He steps out, doffs his helmet, and he's got a mohawk. |

I liked the caption for George Thomas' picture: "Sir Thomas, Anglie." |

Aug-18-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <keypusher> Thanks. Fixed "Elisases", along with an "Elikases" I spotted. |

Aug-18-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Carlos Guillen, who goes on the disabled list more often than Brett Favre retires, is back as a result of this play: http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/news/... Does it look like a dirty slide to you? I didn't have a big problem with it; if Guillen had any agility left, he could probably have avoided it. But the Tigers hit Gardner the first time up tonight. Naturally, he came around to score, so what good did plunking him do? |
Aug-19-10 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, Be advised: The Cubs Traded Derek Lee to the Braves for 3 pitching pospects?? http://www.timesunion.com/sports/ar... They should have dumped the B%$#@&% 3 seasons ago but The cubs don't like eating contract's and would rather lose! The cubs are the antithesis of The New York Yankees!! |

Aug-19-10 | | crawfb5: Game Collection: Lake Hopatcong 1926 is done, more or less (I had to submit a correction slip on one game result). It's something of a companion piece to your Game Collection: Lake Hopatcong 1923 (9th American Chess Congress. |

Aug-26-10 | | eightbyeight: Phony Benoni, in your profile it says you mated with king, bishop, and knight after an adjournment. Do you still have the game score? The mate is so rare I barely know it, and I would love to see it in action. |
