MissScarlett: Tomorrow is the first day of the <Airthings Masters>: https://chess24.com/en/read/news/ca...

Surprise everyone - not least, <Sargon> - by getting a tournament page up before kick-off.

Phony Benoni: We've been experience some duplication in the daily puzzle of ate, but today's has be to noted.

The game is E Gulden vs Andrei Macovei, 2018), which was also used at White's 22nd move on Friday, October 22. On Tuesday, December 15, the position after White's 231st move was used.

In addition, it was also Game of the Day on October 30.

No game is that good. But, seriously, we seem to be stuck in another of those cycles of duplicate Puzzles of the Day which come up now and then.

STYNTZ: I have been a full member for several years, but will NOT be renewing. all i am getting is ads top and bottom of my screen. this is DISTRACTING making it impossible to study any game or opening. since i PAY membership dues i dont think i should be bombarded with advertisements STYNTZ
Dec-26-20  Sokrates: Hi STYNTZ,

Click on "Prefs" on the heading line (next to "Member").

Set a cross in the first line of your preferences "Do not display 3rd party ads.".

Next time you log in, the ads are gone.

Check It Out: <<<Sargon: <Tabanus: [...] they will sneak in ads whenever they can [...]>

Nonsense. Any premium member who—having set the preference to suppress 3rd-party ad display—thereafter sees <any> 3rd-party ad on <any> page needs to <report it immediately, because that's a software error!>>

OhioChessFan: Mobile, Chrome browser. I get ads on the bottom of every page in the alphabetical player directory.>

Check It Out: <Sargon> Similar to <OCF>, I use mobile, Chrome browser. I get ads just below the pgn and above the kibitzing on all game pages.

Obviously a premium member, and "do not display 3rd party ads" is checked in preferences.>

<Sargon> Any word on the software error causing this?

Dec-26-20  cameosis: btw, the one thing that i find really off-putting about chess24 is that they want to charge you for pgns that are freely available elsewhere.

you can’t download games unless you buy a premium membership. even chessbase offers the entire current year on its website for free, not to mention twic and messaggero scacchi … no, thanks. XD

  jessicafischerqueen:

Might be time for admins to set the preference toggle to "Do not display 3rd party ads" as the default position.

Or we could keep posting and re-posting the instructions on how to toggle the switch in response to furious paying members.

What about the furious paying members who don't know about kvetching in this forum? I guess they just never buy another membership.

Seems like a poor business model.

Yes, probably, but how do the grouches always manage to know a premie needn't get ads but don't know how to achieve said adless Nirvana?

Dec-26-20  cameosis: XD …
Dec-27-20  Sokrates: <jessicafischerqueen> Exactly, and my point also. Thanks!

<OhioChessFan> So, according to you a rightful, reasonable complaint about intrusive ads, that shouldn't be visible to members, makes you one of <the grouches>? It's okay to constantly test the forbearance of the members by sneaking in ads and be silent about how to remove them? That's a great businees model to you?

MissScarlett: Talking of business models, how good has the pandemic been for <cg.com>? May we have a ballpark figure for how much site traffic has risen over 2019?

I'm going to change the premium member preference for "Do not dsiplay 3rd party ads" to be selected by default right now.

Also, personally <I totally agree with you regarding the placement of ads being too distracting in some cases>, and I can assure you that this was thankfully—thankfully, for once—not my doing. We'll take steps to promptly mitigate the issue.

Best regards,
Sargon

Sargon: OK I just set the "Do not display 3rd party ads" preference to be selected for ALL premium members, and new premium signups will also have that set as the default when they're activated.
