It's Black to move and find a pretty mate in two.

Jun-24-06  Zebra: ...d4+ followed by ...Nf5# ?

cu8sfan: <Zebra> Exactly. I was black in the above position today. It wasn't a deep game but the finish is nice: The two Knights, the Bishop, the Rook and the c-pawn combine for a mate where no square is covered more than once. I think there's a word for this in chess puzzle lingo.
Jun-24-06  Zebra: Yes, it was cute. Congratulations by the way on winning your group.

cu8sfan: <Congratulations by the way on winning your group.> Thanks. Switzerland is soccer crazy! I hope it will last forever. If we allow as many goals now as we did in the group phase we'll be world champion!

  TheAlchemist: <cu8sfan> It's called a "model mate".

I heard there are T-shirts in print that say "I'm Kübi Kuhn too" or somezthing like that.

Jun-24-06  acirce: That's not a model mate, unfortunately: there are several Black pieces not participating in the mating net, and in both lines at least one square is covered twice. But it's pretty nonetheless.

Sorry, I didn't even pay attention :-). I only read <cu8sfan>'s description. Thanks for correcting me.

cu8sfan: <TheAlchemist/acirce> Thanks. So all the pieces must participate. And I didn't notice that in the 1...Kxd4 variation one square is covered twice.

<I heard there are T-shirts in print that say "I'm Kübi Kuhn too" or somezthing like that.> I never knew the Swiss can be so crazy about soccer. It's beautiful! Let it last for a little longer!

Jun-25-06  acirce: <in the 1...Kxd4 variation one square is covered twice>

Actually, two... d5 is, and e5 is too. It's both occupied by a white pawn and controlled by the d7-knight. In this context this counts as being covered twice. Sorry, but the rules ARE tough :-) Similarly, d4 is after cxd4 Nf5#.

cu8sfan: OK, next time I take better care of how I mate my opponents. (-:
Jun-26-06  chessmoron: <cu8sfan: OK, next time I take better care of how I mate my opponents.> Yuck! That's nasty. <sorry to be immature> =)
Jun-27-06  EmperorAtahualpa: Sorry <cu8sfan> that your boys lost, at your request I was shouting "Hopp Schwiiz" (even though I don't know how to pronounce the double "i") throughout the entire match, but it didn't help! :)

I guess you're a little upset about the match? It's not the most pretty way to go out of a tournament.... you guys need to exercise on your penalty kicks! :)

Jul-10-06  YouRang: Hi <cu8sfan>. For the Biel 2006 Chess Tournament, have you decided if you are going to do run a prediction contest for just the men, or both men and women?

P.S. I am planning to run a contest for the Dortmund tournament since you stated earlier that you don't want to do both Biel and Dortmund. If you change your mind about that, let me know (it's okay with me either way).

Thanks for saving my sanity for one more day :)

Jul-14-06  BishopofBlunder: I don't understand the answer to 13, though I did finally get it myself. All the previous pages referenced the number in question. What the heck does "for_some" have to do with "fourteen".

I also play on ICC. I just discovered your list of people, lol. :)
