Oct-10-08 | | YouRang: Well, the Dodgers lost the first two in Philadelphia, putting some pressure on them to sweep the 3 games at home. Before this Dodgers-Phillies series began, I heard one of the Dodger radio commentators say that Philadelphia may not score often, but when they do, they score in bunches. Boy, he called that right. In two games, the Phillies have not yet had an inning in which they've scored just 1 run, or even just 2 runs. However they had one inning where they scored 3, and two innings where they scored 4! |

Oct-11-08 | | norami: I've always been a Red Sox fan but somehow it's not the same now that they're not cursed. I think I'll become a Cubs fan. They're like the Red Sox used to be - historic team, classic old ballpark, strong fan base and a curse that makes you feel like you're rooting for the underdog no matter how good the players are. |

 | | cu8sfan: <I've always been a Red Sox fan but somehow it's not the same now that they're not cursed.> I think I know what you mean. Still, stay with the Red Sox. You don't want to do this all over again. I think it's good the Red Sox won it again so no one can say they were just lucky. They really built a dynasty. Yes, they're not the same they were before but why do we keep on loving the losers? I always thought that especially to the American mind, winning is everything. One thing against the Cubs winning it all: Bandwaggon jumpers. How many Red Sox fans are out there who have always been Red Sox fans but only surfaced after they had won it all? The worst thing with the Cubs is that you can't be sure they'll ever win it until you die. When the Yankees had a dry spell in the eighties, everyone knew they were going to win again. |
|
Oct-15-08 | | YouRang: So then, here we are with the Dodgers and Red Sox both down 1 game to 3 and facing elimination. Particularly surprising is how badly the Rays have been clobbering the Red Sox. At least the Dodgers have been reasonably within range of winning each of the games they've lost to the Phillies, especially games 1 and 4. I suppose that gives them some reason to find hope... <The worst thing with the Cubs is that you can't be sure they'll ever win it until you die. > I wonder how many Cub fans will have lived their entire lives and died without seeing the Cubs win a World Series? I have no idea, but I'm sure that the Cubs hold the record. :-p |

Oct-15-08 | | YouRang: Congrats to the Phillies.
The Dodgers had Manny, but the Phillies had better pitching, hitting, and defense... |

 | | WannaBe: <YouRang: Congrats to the Phillies. The Dodgers had Manny, but the Phillies had better pitching, hitting, and defense...> You forgot to mention that Dodgers also have/had errors, and errors, and errors, and errors! =( |
|
Oct-16-08 | | YouRang: <WannaBe> I was trying to be charitable by leaving it as "the Phillies played better defense". :-) But yeah, a nightmare 5th inning by Furcal. I doubt that there's anything more deflating for a team that giving away runs with sloppy fielding. The Phillies, in contrast, played very impressive defense. Particularly Utley at 2B and Victorino in CF. I think the Dodgers had some tough luck hitting in this series. They hit several line drives that were caught by infielders, and several hard hit fly balls came within a few feet of being extra-base hits or homers, but were caught. It looked to me like that pitch that Jeff Kent struck out on to end the 8th inning really was low. But then again, I think in that situation the batter has to protect the plate and foul off anything *close* to being a strike. I feel bad for Manny. That guy hit everything, but the hitters before him (Furcal, Ethier) and after him (Martin) could hit nothing. |

|
Oct-22-08 | | YouRang: Oct 07-08 <YouRang><So, what do you think the World Series Matchup will be? I'd like to see Dodgers-Red Sox. My gut tells me it will be Phillies-Red Sox.> That was everyone's big clue that they should have bet heavily on the Rays getting into the World Series. Sorry if you missed it. Game 1 of the World Series will begin shortly. Hot tip: I'm expecting the Phillies to win tonight. |
|
Oct-22-08 | | YouRang: For those of you with a soft spot for losing teams (hint: <cu8sfan>), you might want to root for the Phillies. They have actually lost more games than any other team, and they've won the World Series just once in their 125 year history (in 1980). The Cubs have won twice as many! From 1883-1975, the Phillies made exactly two playoff appearances (1915,1950). Of the original teams, the Phillies have the worst overall winning percentage (.468). |

<GENEVA (Reuters) – Repairing the giant particle collider built to simulate the "Big Bang" could cost up to 35 million Swiss francs ($29 million), the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) said on Friday. ...
Scientists started it up with great fanfare in September, firing beams of proton particles around its 27-km (17-mile) underground tunnel. But nine days later they were forced to shut it down when an electrical fault caused a helium leak. Gillies said that helium leak caused "quite considerable mechanical damage to the accelerator."> http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20081205... |

Dec-14-08 | | crawfb5: Taylor Kingston just said over on rec.games.chess.misc that there will be no holiday quiz at chesscafe.com this year. Kingston should know. He writes most of the questions. One of last year's winners asked because the website has made no mention of the quiz to date. :-( :-( :-( |

 | | cu8sfan: Even though I hardly ever was able to solve any of the clues it would be a real shame. At least we have the Chessgames Present Hunt Clues Page. |
|
Dec-25-08 | | crawfb5: Thanks for the link to the chessbase puzzles. I was too slow for most of the holiday hunt here, except for one hanging curve ball I knew without any digging. Of course I thought of a better way to do some searching now that it's over. Story of my life. :-) |

Jan-04-09 | | crawfb5: Well, there's a quiz that just started at http://www.creb.be/ that is more in the spirit of the chesscafe quizzes. It's not as long (30 points) and despite having a very poor grasp of French, I think I worked out about 2/3 of the answers yesterday. :-) |
