  stevemcd87: Hello everyone,

Sorry for keeping you in the dark for so long.
I've been on "vacation/holiday" for about a week now.
I'll be back home on the night of August 18th.
I probably won't work a full day until the 20th, 19th is my birthday.
I've just been doing regular maintenance(otD's, emails, etc...).

We do have some good news, we just brought <beatgiant> on board to lead the UTF8 issue... among other issues.
I sent him links to all comments regarding the UTF8 issue(thanks to everyone that has been doing research about the issue).
I'm also catching him up on the dozen ways I tried that doesn't work.

<Tab> I'll look into <Gibraltar Masters swisses>. The script I wrote for the dates is supposed to look for games that don't have a proper date and updates it to the date from the PGN. We do have back ups so I will fix it if it was due to the script... Sorry.

<Stone> I'll fix https://www.chessgames.com/playerli... asap.

Please leave Reykjavik (1964) as is, so we can use for testing.

Sorry again for being a "quiet turd" for so long, I'll be coming back fully rejuvenated next week. I'll be sure to let everyone know next time I decide to take a break.

As <stevemcd87> posted above, I've just started looking into the charset problems (less than a day so far). I have read all the comments above. Also, <stevemcd87> has briefed me about the history (how it started, previous fix attempts etc).

My priority right now is to take inventory of all the known symptoms (different types of characters, different platforms etc.) and any info you share will help. I invite you all to my own forum for the purpose.

Tabanus: <Steve> Ok... I fixed Gibraltar Masters 2014, 2015 & 2016 dates by hand. For 2013 and 2012 the dates appeared to be Ok.

Tabanus: <Steve> The Update Event Crosstable doesn't work for (Swisses for) the years about 2006 to 2010 (and Gibraltar 2011). It works for a short while, then goes back to list of participants. I've mentioned this before over the years, but never got an answer :)

Welcome back <Stephen>!

Welcome aboard <beatgiant>!

Aug-13-21  George Wallace: <I probably won't work a full day until the 20th, 19th is my birthday. >

lol

When did kids start getting the idea that their birthday is a no-work day?

LOL!

I think back to when I was a young adult, back when men were men (sorta!) and if I would have told my boss that I'm not working a full day on x-day, because it's my birthday, I would have been fired and escorted off the property!

LAWD HAVE MERCY ON ME!

I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!

Aug-13-21  George Wallace: Here's a serious question, why do I get a 500 error sometimes? It just happened. I went to submit my last post and got a 500 error. I clicked the back arrow and click submit again and got the error again, but on the third time it went through.

This has been happening for a few months now.

beatgiant: <George Wallace> Thanks for that report. That sounds like bug (4) on the list in Steve's profile, <random Internal Server Errors>. We don't know the answer yet, but I will be investigating it.

You said you see it when posting a kibitz. Have you seen it in any other contexts?

MissScarlett: <You said you see it when posting a kibitz. Have you seen it in any other contexts?>

It can happen loading any page. But outbreaks are sporadic and typically resolve themselves within hours. The last set began on the Monday you started work. My assumption is that they occur when changes are made - or being made - to the system.

  stevemcd87: <Stone> https://www.chessgames.com/playerli... is up now.
Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

LOL. I get where you're coming from. I spent over a decade of my adult life working for POS companies/bosses, as you have, in the past. I used to work as a heavy equipment operator for various demolition companies in Miami, Florida.
It seems it's more of what line of work one is in, rather than what generation one grew up in.
In my previous trade, it is frowned upon every time one takes a personal day.
In my new profession, I've had colleagues take days off for all types of reasons(birthdays, kid's school event, etc...), without any sense of guilt or animosity.
IMHO, having a job that would fire me for asking for a day/week off(for whatever reason), wouldn't make me feel more like a "man".
I enjoy being one of the blessed individuals that can easily take a day/week off, whenever I see fit... Susan is a very understandable person.

As the "kids" say: "Don't hate, Congratulate!". LOL.

Aug-17-21  Z truth 000000001: <JFQ> I think <steve> can take the occasional humorous barb. Lord knows he'll need to!

<Z> lol I have no doubt that Steve can take it.

I was attempting a humorous post to the good <nok> eh:

========

<<nok> Excellent human resource management brah! You really know your stuff.> was not meant as an admonishment or criticism in the slightest.

It's a shame we can't use emotjis here as an aid to signifying "mood" and "emotional tenor" to our internet communication. We can use emotjis on lots of other human chat sites so why not at a chess human chat sites?

Are we not human? No! We are chess players!

beatgiant: <jessicafischerqueen> The emojis are broken for the same reason the accented European characters are broken - errors in the way the utf-8 is configured. We're working on that now.
Aug-19-21  Z truth 000000001: I think the whole thing could be fixed by bringing the DB into the modern era.

E.g. use FIDE collation ordering for player names.

(And utf-8 for encoding)

<<JFQ> I was attempting a humorous post to the good <nok> eh:>

:?!

At the risk of going meta-meta, I was doing the same:

<Lord knows he'll need to!>

Oh, and for the record, I don't do emojis too often. Not enough ! for the buck!

She said that once, in the elevator, he told her he was on the verge of changing that style and would be sending out a memo soon. And then he died. >

stevemcd87: <MissS> The Opening Explorer page has been updated to fix the issue with the missing image

The Opening Explorer scripts(used to bring the page up-to-date) isn't working 100% yet, we've been making progress. Once we get it working, we should be able to bring it up-to-date every week.

Chessical: On the Chess players' directory page the letter A does not return any players. Other letters do provide an appropriate list.
Aug-23-21  Z4all: I was wondering who'd finally notice... kudos to <Chessical> for being first.

I guess not many people use the <Players> list feature.

beatgiant: <MissScarlett> I'm about to implement some changes that could break the site if I get careless, so better ask them again tomorrow.
Aug-23-21  George Wallace: I see no openings listed on mobile. I do not have it set that way in preferences. So when I go to the current tournament and browse the list of games, I don’t see the opening listed.
