 | | Stonehenge: For some reason the games of Martin G Walker end up here: NN instead of here: Martin Walker. |

 | | stevemcd87: <Stone>
There seems to have been a bug that wasn't displaying the aliases of NN, which has been fixed.
I believe once we remove the alias <Martin G Walker> from <NN>, it will no longer direct the games there.
It might create a new player when uploading the next game; in which case, merging the 2 players should add <Martin G Walker> as an alias to Martin Walker, which should direct all future <Martin G Walker> games to Martin Walker.
Let me know if you run into any issues. |

 | | Chessical: There appears to be a bug in the Advanced Search by which it can include in the search results forenames rather than surnames alone. This can be seen in a search for all games played between Marco and Wolf. It includes a game between two players with the forenames Marco and Wolf. If it is useful, I can provide a screenshot. |
|
Jan-05-24 | | stone free or die: I'd be interested in seeing <CG> address the issue raised by <Chessical>. I've long advocated for <CG> to follow FIDE's (and practically everyone else) use of the <surname, prenom> form. * * * * *
What's even more "comical" is that if one searches with the full names: <Georg Macro>
<Heinrich Wolf> the results are even more scrambled!

We will be adding logic to the <Update Player Page> feature to ensure the FIDE ratings are up-to-date. We will also be automating the process for out-of-date pages soon.<Chessical: There appears to be a bug in the Advanced Search by which it can include in the search results forenames rather than surnames alone.>
We are discussing how we may be able to update the 'Advanced Search' feature to only filter surnames. Re <fixpgn>:
I haven't read the script yet to understand the logic but I wonder how we handle players who changed their name, do we update all of their games to match their current name or do we leave it for "historical" purposes?
We'll probably need to make modification to the script as well, now that our database is 10x the amount of 2015. |

 | | jnpope: Advanced search keyword issue.
I was trying to find games played between Martin Severin From and Tassilo von der Lasa played in 1867:
https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che...Returned zero results.
However, the EZ search returned three results:
search "From - Lasa 1867"
It looks like "From" is problem for the Advanced search form. |
|
Jan-14-24 | | stone free or die: <<jn> It looks like "From" is problem for the Advanced search form.> Likely so.
The DB needs reworking for names especially. This is a big job, but it holds the site back otherwise. <Daniel> did lots of hidden filtering in his attempt to make the site more user friendly. Many conjunctions took the hit for the cause. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylX...
(You didn't expect me to post Pink's version did you?) |

 | | kingscrusher: Hi Steve
Thanks for the FIDE ratings update.
One other minor thing I noticed - on a big TV with Silk browser, the font size seems to be huge as if the TV is being treated like a big mobile phone. Perhaps this could be optimised at some point in the future. Cheers, K |

Jan-27-24 | | stone free or die: <kingcrusher> - fwiw - often browsers have a setting where you can force the server to deliver the pages in desktop or mobile format. I don't use Silk, but Chrome on my phone has it. |
|
Jan-27-24 | | stone free or die: <kingcrusher> looks like it does have such a setting, but you might not be able to set it as a default. https://www.amazonforum.com/s/quest... . |

 | | MissScarlett: In the last couple of days, uploads with Source tags are adding a superfluous semi-colon to the field: <[Source "Illustrated Sporting & Dramatic News, 1895.05.11, p.352;"]> H V Crane vs W Naish, 1895 |

Feb-02-24 | | stone free or die: <<[Source "BritBase;John Saunders;2023.10.13;1;2023.10.13;1"]>> I think I know where the extra semi-colon came from. |
|
Feb-02-24 | | stone free or die: <steve> could you tweak your formatting a little to add white-space to make it easier to read - like this: <[Source "BritBase; John Saunders; 2023.10.13; 1; 2023.10.13; 1"]> And, to tell the truth, duplicating the date when it's the same seems unnecessary. Just delete it, e.g. <[Source "BritBase; John Saunders; 2023.10.13; 1"]> In fact, the quality factor could use a notation to break up the numbers - <[Source "BritBase; John Saunders; 2023.10.13; Q1"]> but that's clearly mostly my preferences showing. |

Feb-03-24 | | stone free or die: So that makes it explicit, which I only implied in my post. The multiple <Source> tags come from the <ChessBase> (aka <CB>) convention. <CG> has just started recognizing these tags after prompting from me (and other biographers), in order to accommodate <McGowan>'s use of the tags to record the more normal historical sources of the games. We probably need to discuss what to do with online databases which utilize these <CB> Source tags. I know <CB> itself often uses these tags in reference to itself. |
