Jun-24-13 | | Edmontonchessclub: Thanks to Chessgames.com for covering this tournament again this year. The scoring is actually 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw (as in Bilbao and the London Chess Classic). |
Jun-24-13 | | parmetd: Field looks similar to last year. No Krush, but Bruzon. sad to see the silly football scoring here. |
Jun-24-13 | | Shams: <Edmontonchessclub> If I remember last year you guys took pains to make sure norms would be obtainable; is that the case this year? Looks like a great lineup. |
Jun-24-13 | | Big Pawn: I think it's interesting to give 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. Otherwise top players play 13 move draws year after year. |
Jun-24-13 | | Edmontonchessclub: Shams,
Yes. By traditional scoring, 6.5/9 will earn a GM norm. To get an IM norm, players will have to score 4.5/9.
It sounds easy, but it's definitely not! |
Jun-24-13 | | Shams: Doesn't sound easy at all, to me! |
Jun-24-13 | | Edmontonchessclub: Round 2 starts in about 2 and a half hours. Short vs Bruzon tonight. Live games here:

Jun-25-13 | | waustad: Bruzon had Short for dinner. Maybe it could be called something like "braised short ribs"? |
Jun-25-13 | | PhilFeeley: It's good to see another Canadian tournament here. They are few and far between, and Spraggett recently reported that the Saskatchewan Chess Association (?) recently disbanded due to lack of membership and assistance from the Canadian Federation. He counted only 25 players in the whole province! Chess in Canada is indeed in trouble, so it's very good to see this tournament year after year. |
Jun-25-13
 | | HeMateMe: They must love Nigel. This year he gets his own sled dog team for transport to and from the venue. |
Jun-25-13 | | Octal: Good round for black. |
Jun-25-13 | | Octavia: < The scoring is actually 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw (as in Bilbao and the London Chess Classic).
FAVORITES-MODE: [ON] [OFF]> just because its used somewhere else, doesn't make it good. |
Jun-25-13 | | LucB: <HeMateMe>
Sled dogs!... :D
Yesterday it was 31C, with a humidex factor of 40C in the Outaouais region where I live, near Ottawa (west of Montréal).. 40C is 105F roughly.. |
Jun-25-13
 | | HeMateMe: ....it's an air-conditioned sled! |
Jun-25-13 | | LucB: Oooohhh riiiggghhhhtt!
:D |
Jun-25-13 | | Edmontonchessclub: The Chief Arbiter's cellphone just went off in the middle of round 3...a bit embarrassing. Lots of jokes about how he should be forfeited. But nobody seems to have been disturbed. |
Jun-26-13
 | | HeMateMe: Is this top photo Kasparov and Short?

Jun-26-13 | | PhilFeeley: Someone needs to fix the table here: Rodney Perez Garcia and Rodney PPerez Garcia are the same. |
Jun-26-13 | | Edmontonchessclub: Yes, I've sent an email to Chessgames.com to try to get it fixed. Not sure how it happened. |
Jun-26-13 | | Edmontonchessclub: The misspelling was on our end, and it screwed up the Chessgames crosstable, which is created with their automated software. We're trying to get it corrected now.
IM Perez Garcia has 7 points (two wins, one draw) after three rounds. |
Jun-26-13 | | Edmontonchessclub: Fixed now. |
Jun-26-13 | | Edmontonchessclub: After three rounds and 15 games, we have yet to see 1.e4. Meanwhile, Black has 8 wins, White only 4. |
Jun-26-13 | | Edmontonchessclub: Nevermind, Garcia vs Gardner in round 2 was 1.e4. |
Jun-26-13 | | Edmontonchessclub: Nigel Short, five minutes ago, holding a can.
"So...what is a *Root...beer*?" |
Jun-27-13 | | Everett: < Big Pawn: I think it's interesting to give 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. Otherwise top players play 13 move draws year after year.> The Tal Memorial had regular scoring and no 13-move draws. Check out the other tournaments recently. The rules against early draws are working. There is no need to change the scoring system at all. |
