Jan-01-18 | | zb2cr: A bit of an unusual mating pattern. 51. ... Qh3+; 52. Kxh3, Rh1#. |
Jan-01-18 | | Sularus: 51. ... Qh3+
52. KxQ Rh1++
nice way to start the year! |
Jan-01-18 | | Rumor: Well, Santa gave me a nice shiny Premium membership, so hello to everyone for the first time, and a Happy New Year. Nice to be eased into the year gently, with a Monday puzzle falling on Jan 1st. Looking forward to all your witty and insightful kibitzers over the course of the year! |
Jan-01-18 | | lost in space: How nice - a Monday and at the same time the start of the new year. 51...Qh3+ 52. Kxh3 Rh1# |
Jan-01-18 | | Mayankk: Too early to make it a puzzle - Many of us probably saw this, along with a number of other interesting wins from Anand, just a few days earlier. Will they pick all the puzzles this week from the same championship? |
Jan-01-18 | | agb2002: Black has a rook and a pawn for a bishop and a knight. White threatens Qd3+ and Qxh5+.
An invasion with the black queen 51... Rh1+ 52.Kxh1 Qh3+ goes nowhere but 51... Qh3+ 52.Kxh3 Rh1# wins. |
Jan-01-18 | | morfishine: Saw this when it happened just recently at the Rapid championships its mate-in-two: <51...Qh3+> & <52...Rh1#> ***** |
Jan-01-18 | | stacase: What everyone else said (-: |
Jan-01-18 | | malt: A Queen at h3, will do it for me
51...Qh3+ and 52...Rh1#
Happy New Year ! |
Jan-01-18 | | et1: As previosly said 51 Ne3 would have saved white but this victory shows how good Anand was to become Rapid WC last week ! |
Jan-01-18 | | WorstPlayerEver: Nice tribute to Anand. He seems to get younger each other day :P |
Jan-01-18 | | alphee: Good start for a new year .... funny |
Jan-01-18 | | AlicesKnight: A happy New Year! - and a pleasing if uncomplicated one to greet us; 51.... Qh3+ forces capture and leads to ....Rh1# |
Jan-01-18 | | patzer2: On second thought, 44...Rf2 is not technically a mistake as Black could have simply regrouped after 45. Bc5 with 45...Re2! 46. Be3 Kg8! -+ (-4.76 @ 29 ply, Stockfish 8). Stronger of course is an immediate 44...Kg8! -+ (-6.52 @ 32 ply, Stockfish 8). Where Black did let the win potentially slip away was with 46...Rd1?, allowing 47. Qf4 = (-0.18 @ 37 ply, Stockfish 8). Instead, 46...Qf5! -+ (-2.61 @ 32 ply, Stockfish 8) is winning after 47. Ne3 Rf2+ 48. Kg1 Qf3 49. Qf4 Qxf4 50. gxf4 Rxf4 51. Ng2 Rf3 52. Bd6 g5 -+ (-3.48 @ 29 ply, Stockfish 8). |
Jan-01-18 | | Once: You can imagine the white king shouting at the Nf2 - "Aren't you going to do something?" Knights can be especially useless up close. I suppose we should never bring a knight to a rook fight. |
Jan-01-18 | | thegoodanarchist: I got it! I played like Anand! ;)
LOL Happy Monday everyone! |
Jan-01-18 | | The Kings Domain: Delightful puzzle and a Happy New Year to all. :-) |
Jan-01-18 | | RookFile: For some reason I had a hard time with this. I kept trying things like 51....Qb6, trying to get in Qg1+. But then I was wondering what black does after Qxh5+ from white. Finally it dawned on me that black can just play 51...Qh3+, forcing mate next move. |

 | | offramp: McShane was also checkmated in this tournament very prettily, in Ganguly vs McShane, 2017. I am certain it is not bloody-mindedness, just letting the game run its course. |
Jan-01-18
 | | AylerKupp: I saw the mating pattern immediately, but I first thought of 51...Rh1+. But after 52.Kxh1 Qh3+ White's king has an escape square in g1. So, since Black only has 2 pieces left, by a process of elimination that left only 51...Qh3+. I guess that the Force was not with Luke in this game. |
Jan-01-18 | | kdogphs: I've played roughly 140 rated chess games. I have sacrificed my queen only once to get the victory... Puzzles like these give me hope... |
Jan-01-18 | | stst: if White moves first then...51. Qd3+ gains a R, while QxP+ gains nothing.
But it's Black's move, usual Q-sac will work, viz. 51...Qh3+
52.KxQ Rh1# |

Jan-01-18
 | | An Englishman: Good Afternoon: Happy New Year! Interesting game, esp. after the exchange of B & N for R and 2P. 28.Qh5 with the threat of 29.Re7 posed an unpleasant choice for Black; passive defense with 28...Qf8, or sacrifice a pawn to seize the d-file with 28...Qd7. The sac proved better as Anand took the initiative. |
