I think her mom would force her to leave. There's nothing stronger to a mother than watching their child leave a horrific environment. When asked if she'd ever considered how or when her child would leave, she said "I'd never thought of it". That statement in itself is an indicator of the desperate condition of those who live in abject poverty. There is no time to dream, no time to hope, there is only food and water, and survival. But as soon as the glimmer of a piece of hope starts to shine, you can bet her mom is going to jump in and push her to fly. |

You might like to take a look at the additional links in her bio, especially the video which is very moving. Notice that other girls are starting to get interested in chess, and that Phiona wants to become a grandmaster so she can earn enough to help her family. |
