Jan-10-11 | | twinlark: Hope this woman succeeds. What a harrowing story. |
Jan-10-11 | | Bobwhoosta: Agreed. An amazing story. |
Jan-10-11 | | Jim Bartle: Superficially this sounds similar to Arthur Ashe discovering 12-year-old Yannick Noah during a goodwill tour in Africa. |
Jan-10-11 | | twinlark: Except there's no-one to take her and her family out of there. |
Jan-10-11 | | Bobwhoosta: <twinlark>
If she's as strong as she seems and getting stronger, someone will find her soon enough. I don't know about her family... |
Jan-10-11 | | twinlark: But so many people have AIDS in that area, that her mom has dreaded getting her tested. Don't think she'd leave her family behind...when you're that poor, family is all you have. |
Jan-11-11 | | DanielBryant: I was pleasantly surprised to see some decent chess coverage from ESPN Magazine. I couldn't put it any better than twinlark; a harrowing story indeed. |
Jan-11-11 | | newka: Where's that Soviet Chess System when you need it? |
Jan-11-11 | | BobCrisp: White people, you are mad. Keep your patronising noses out of Africa. |
Jan-11-11 | | Bobwhoosta: <twinlark>
I think her mom would force her to leave. There's nothing stronger to a mother than watching their child leave a horrific environment. When asked if she'd ever considered how or when her child would leave, she said "I'd never thought of it". That statement in itself is an indicator of the desperate condition of those who live in abject poverty. There is no time to dream, no time to hope, there is only food and water, and survival. But as soon as the glimmer of a piece of hope starts to shine, you can bet her mom is going to jump in and push her to fly. |

You might like to take a look at the additional links in her bio, especially the video which is very moving. Notice that other girls are starting to get interested in chess, and that Phiona wants to become a grandmaster so she can earn enough to help her family. |
Feb-18-11 | | Llawdogg: I also hope she succeeds. Go Phiona! |
Feb-18-11
 | | Penguincw: What's her rating? |
Feb-18-11
 | | alexmagnus: Unrated. The only FIDE rated games she ever played were five games in the Olympiad 2010 (0.5/5 - draw against a 1723 and losses against 1464, 1718, 2086 and 2103). |

Aug-08-12 | | PhilFeeley: Does anyone remember if Chessbase had her story in their coverage of the 2010 Olympiad? Big miss if they didn't. I loved the "blissful shriek" at the end. |

To be from Katwe is to be an underdog in Uganda. And finally, to be female is to be an underdog in Katwe." >>> http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news... Well, the days are still warm & often then windless here, but these sentences gave me the chills. We are fortunate to have chess, because it can work wonders. :0) |
