Mathias Gerusel is a (West) German IM who finished second to William James Lombardy at the World Junior Championship (1957). He went on to study mathematics. His best tournament results have been 3rd at Büsum 1969 after Bent Larsen and Lev Polugaevsky, and 5th= at Solingen 1974.
