Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> I remember this from the introduction to USSR Championship (1929). White could have won with the equally spectacular <2.Qe4+!>.

Oh, why can't we have the full game score?

<PhonyBenoni>,
The position was highlighted in a tactics book that I have, which didn't have the full score.

Although being only 8 years older Rokhlin was the first mentor of Botvinnik. He convinced Capablanca to travel to Leningrad to give a simul in 1925 and he made sure that the 14 years old Botvinnik could play against the champion. He also fought for Botvinnik's inclusion in the 1927 soviet championship.

He is said to have invented the Lenin quote "Chess is the gymnastics of the mind" to pressure unwilling officials for support.

And he devised some of the earliest soviet chess training courses. (Yusupovs "Boost your chess" book series is basically a modernized version of these soviet training courses.)

So Rokhlin is one of the earliest organizers of what came to be known as the "soviet chess school".
