DIRK VAN FOREEST
(born May-03-1862, died Feb-24-1956, 93 years old) Netherlands

[what is this?]

The elder brother of Arnold van Foreest and the great-great granduncle of Jorden van Foreest, who won the Dutch Championship in 2016.

Dirk van Foreest was (unofficial) Dutch Champion in 1885, 1886 and 1887. He also took fifth place in 1884 and took second place, behind Rudolf Loman, in 1888.

By profession, van Foreest was a medical doctor, and Max Euwe once said he could have been World Champion if he had dedicated himself fully to chess.

Feb-15-09  Jim Bartle: Great line.I just KNEW there was a great comeback from Forrest Gump!!

I just saw that "Gump" was named one of the 25 greatest conservative movies by National Review. The dumb but well-intentioned hero succeeds while his hippy, 60s girlfriend is destroyed. Wonderful.

Phony Benoni: Ran across a remarkable game in the Baltimore American for June 6, 1886:

Dirk Van Foreest - Levi Benima

Dutch Chess Association Tournament, The Hague, 1885

1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 g5 4.Bc4 g4 5.0-0 gxf3 6.Bxf7+ Kxf7 7.Qxf3 Bc5+ 8.Kh1 Nf6 9.e5 d6 10.exf6 Bf5 11.d4 Bb6 12.Qxf4 Bxc2 13.Nc3 c6 14.Qf2 Bd3 15.Qg3 Bg6 16.Ne4 Bxe4 17.Qg7+ Ke6 18.f7 Rf8 19.Qg4+ Kd5 20.Rf5+ Bxf5 21.Qxf5+ Kxd4 22.Be3+ Kxe3

At this point, White has a forced mate in five moves (have un finding it). He missed this line, but was able to mate Black on move 34.

However, the source does not give the concluding moves. It also does not specify the year or which Van Forreest we're talking about, but according to Di Felice the Dutch Championship in the Hague was played in 1885 where Dirk Van Forreest defeated Benima twice.

I'd like to submit the game, but need the full score.

Nov-29-13  thomastonk: <Phony Benoni> The game continued as follows: 23.♕f3+ ♔d4 24.♕f4+ ♔d5 25.♕f5+ ♔d4 26.♖d1+ ♔c4 27.♕e4+ ♔b5 28.♕d3+ ♔b4 29.a3+ ♔a5 30.♕c3+ ♔a6 31.♕c4+ ♔a5 32.b4+ ♔a4 33.b5+ ♔a5 34.♕b4#.

The moves are taken from a collector's database and unfortunately I've no original source. In this database the game is denoted as a casual game played on September 3, 1885 in The Hague.

Nov-29-13  thomastonk: <Phony Benoni> The same collector's database has also a game Benima vs Van Foreest, 1885, for which it states that it has been played at the "Bondswedstrijd" (tourney of the national association). Reports on Van Foreest's victory in that tournament can be found in several Dutch newspapers of September 7, 1885.
Nov-29-13  thomastonk: <Phony Benoni> Now I have seen both championship games between Van Foreest and Benima of 1885 in the yearbook of the Dutch chess association: your fragment is from another game, so the 'casual' from my db could be justified.

The 'Baltimore American' reprinted from http://www.chessarch.com/excavation... , where the final 12 moves are also missing, but it confirms the date that also appears in my db.

Nov-29-13  thomastonk: <Phony Benoni> Google books gives me a snippet view of a game header in "Schaakkalender" of the "Noordelijk Schaakbond", page 89 as follows:

"MUZIO-GAMBIT

gespeeld te 's Hage, den 3.Sept. 1885, buiten het Tornooi.

Jhr D. Van Foreest, van Amsterdam L.Benima, van Winshoten."

The 'buiten het Tornooi' means outside the tournament. Maybe someone in the US can read the whole book and confirm that this is your game.

Phony Benoni: <thomastonk> Thanks for all the work. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find the full text of "Schachkalendar" in Google Books, but the background of the game seem clear.

And, yes, it is surely an offhand game. The tournament games we have from Dirk Van Forreest don't feature the Accelerated Double Muzio.

By the way, the "Baltimore American" quoted the game from the "St. Louis GLobe-Democrat. Here's the publication in that newspaper:

http://www.chessarch.com/excavation...

Almost word for word, but the Globe-Democrat does give the game date of September 3, 1885.

Phony Benoni: <thomastonk> Sorry, I overlloked that you already had the reference from the St. Louis Globe Democrat.

  Penguincw: R.I.P. Dirk van Forrest.

BTW: Any relation to Jorden van Foreest or perhaps Arnold van Foreest?

UPDATE: Just doing a bit of research, I see Arnold is his younger brother, and Jorden is his brother's great-great grandson or another way to look at it, nephew's great-grandson (whatever if you call that). Is that correct?
