IM and WGM Li Ruofan grew up in the Jiangsu province, but lives in Senzhen, China together with her husband and trainer GM Zhong Zhang. Her favorite chessplayer is Alexander Alekhine.

Li was Asian women's champion in 2001 and Chinese women's champion in 2006.

She contested the FIDE Knock-out Women's World Championship (2012), but lost in the third set of tiebreakers of the first round to US IM Irina Krush.
