Mar-13-06  EmperorAtahualpa: A photo of her taken during the Women's World Chess Championships: http://www.womenchess.com/images/ga...

This is the lady responsible for kicking out Lahno. :)

Mar-25-06  lopium: Where is from this beautiful lady? Latin or south America to me.
Mar-25-06  Caissanist: Peru. Peru seems to have a stronger chess tradition than most other Latin American countries, don't know why.
Mar-25-06  Jim Bartle: Part of an interview with her after her second round loss. She's happy to play well, said she had her second round game won but blew it, and that the Peruvian Federation didn't want to pay for her trainer's flight, so she went alone:

Torre 64: que paso?,

Karen Zapata: hola acabo de terminar

Torre 64: Y?

Karen Zapata: Empate pero la tenia ganada

Torre 64: Que pena

Karen Zapata: Una pieza de mas y me equivoco…si pues, me puse nerviosa

Torre 64: Si estuve siguiendo tu partida

Mar-25-06  lopium: <Caissanist: Peru. Peru seems to have a stronger chess tradition than most other Latin American countries, don't know why.> I would say Argentina or even Mexico seems to have a stronger chess tradition.
Mar-25-06  LoFarkas: Hey, Peru certainly has the longest chess tradition... Some of the incas played really well and beat the spanish conquistadores in the 1500s, who brought the game in. AFAIK, one was killed because he humiliated a conquerer in chess.
Mar-25-06  acirce: Well, I knew they made sacrifices, but I'm not sure how successful they were.
Mar-25-06  Jim Bartle: The Inca Atahualpa was captured in Cajamarca in the 1530s. While in captivity the Spaniards taught him chess, and he began to defeat them all.

Atahualpa was later executed by the Spanish after sending to Cusco to have his chamber filled with gold as high as he could reach.

Mar-25-06  LoFarkas: I'll have to dig up that short story, or rather, "tradición" by Ricardo Palma "Los incas ajedrecistas"... I think it was not Atahualpa. He did play chess, but wasn't killed because of it, if I'm not mistaken. There were several chessplaying incas.
Mar-25-06  lopium: Nice information! I didn't know Incas were taught to play chess and were especially good at it. I went to Cuzco, I was feeling then out of this world :) I slept at a house of Peruvian people, the grandmother knows Quetchua, it was nice.
