Ildiko Madl was born in Tapolca, Hungary. She was European Women's Junior Champion in 1984 and was awarded the WIM title in the same year. She won the World U-20 Women Championship in 1986. After that she was awarded the WGM title. In 1992 she became an IM. Hungarian women's champion in 1990, 1991 and 1993.

Apr-07-06  percyblakeney: The first time the Soviet Union didn't win when participating in the Women's Chess Olympiad it was mainly thanks to the Polgar sisters. However Madl won a crucial game in the match against the Soviet Union in spite of losing her boyfriend in a car crash just before the tournament. Sam Sloan tells the story:
