June 2007
Andrei Volokitin is one of a rare breed of players: he achieved a ranking in the world's top 20 while still a teenager, playing dynamic and often brilliant chess. Although we cannot all aspire to emulate his achievements, there is much that we can learn from his training methods, his games and his general approach to chess. These topics are the subject of this book, written in collaboration with his trainer. The core material of the book is 375 positions where the reader is given a task or asked a question. These tasks resemble those that players regularly face over the board, and are especially useful from a training viewpoint. Sometimes we are told we need to find a combination, but often the task is simply to decide on a move. It is for us to determine whether to play quietly or stake everything on a sacrificial attack! The examples are all from recent years, and so even the most zealous reader of chess literature will have seen few of them previously. Many of the positions are from Volokitin's own games, so we get the 'inside story' on some truly spectacular chess. We are also presented with fine examples from Grabinsky's training files, carefully collected and graded over the years for their instructive merit. The commentaries and detailed solutions explain the key issues in each position, and also convey the authors' philosophy of chess and their love for the game. > |

| Timex: Volotkin is very strong, but has more downs than ups these days. |

| Phoenix: I have "Perfect Your Chess", and can testify that it is a very good book. There are plenty of exercises that are hard for me to solve (I have a 2240 FIDE), but I like challenges. |

| sitzkrieg: Is volokitin not playing in the European Ch. today? I don't see his game broadcasted on playchess. |

| dx9293: <Phoenix> Yes, PERFECT YOUR CHESS is an excellent book!! I am thinking of asking Grabinsky to train me... |

| wolfmaster: Volokitin has been invited to another supertournament, Aerosvit (2008), and so far is sharing second with 1.5/2, having defeated Onischuk. Congrats to him, and let's hope he has a good tourney! |

| WBP: Interesting photograph of Volokitin.
It appears as though the tournament he's playing in is being held in a bar somehwere, as the sign behind him sems to be advertising Littleneck Clams (presumably on the half shell--good barfood) for $14.50. Hope all the players ate and drank well. Either way, here's a day early happy Birthday, Andrei. |

 |
| WBP: Actually, it's probably not a tournament after all. The flag kind of suggests it, but I think the flowers would not really be appropriate beside a chessboard--distracting, perhaps. |

| sitzkrieg: Did he lose on his birthday?! |

| sitzkrieg: To go along with the rating mania, what will be the rating of Volo after his performance at Foros? |

| shahjinan: This guy has beaten Carlsen with 4-0!!!!! |

| returnoftheking: You make it sound like it's a big deal.
He is now doing quite well at the russian team championships with wins against Movsesian and a less known GM and draws against Wang Hao, Timofeev and Alekseev. I am still waiting for him to get into the (meaningless) 2700 club. |

Let's hope he takes the last few steps to the top. I am sure he can do it! |

| returnoftheking: A very smooth thematic win for Volokitin today:
Volokitin,Andrei - Johannessen,Leif Erlend [C97]

It's a pity he is now avoiding Volokitin;
7 games in 3 years and only 1 game in the next 3 years, even withdrawing from the ETC in the process;) |

 |
| rogge: <...even withdrawing from the ETC in the process;> That's crap, and you know it. Carlsen would've faced Eljanov (who lost against Hammer today). I guess I've had enough of this and other charming posts lately, <rotk>. |
 |
| Oct-24-09 |
| returnoftheking: Oh, it's just a joke..Didn't you see the ;-) ?
And the game against Johannessen is really instructive. Take it easy rogge, or put me on ignore for a couple of days. I don't want to piss you off but I won't change my tone because of you. It's not like this is the worst post of today or coming from nowhere. |
 |
| Oct-24-09 |
| returnoftheking: Glad to see you followed my advice, hope it helps..
This is for when you have cooled off:
Regarding the "crap",
did you see the post today attributing Hammer's win over Eljanov to his acquaintance with Carlsen?
Or the comment about Naka being hyped the most? You get it? |
