Apr-18-15 | | Retireborn: Sad news. His book on the 1895 Hastings tournament is one of my favourites. |
|
Apr-18-15 | | cro777: I am greatly saddened to hear this news. He was a highly regarded chess writer. I also greatly enjoyed reading his notes on current top-level chess http://crouchnotes.blogspot.co.uk/?... This was his last note (April 11th): "Sadly, the news at St Louis dominates all discussion in the US Championships. The forfeit of Wesley So's game against Varuzhan Akobian is deeply controversial, and no doubt will have long term implications..." Rest in peace International Master Dr Colin Crouch. |

Apr-19-15 | | alechyne: This is terribly sad news. Wonderful character. Whenever I played matches at Harrow, he would always be there, helping children with their chess for free – and none of that 'Look at me, I'm an IM'. One of the great, humane figures in British chess. |

Apr-27-15 | | SimplicityRichard: I cannot but make comment on the passing of the great Colin Crouch who left the wordly plane on 18th April 2015 (a few days ago). IM Colin Crouch was the humblest strongest Chess player I ever had the pleasure of playing against. Needless to add that I lost the few rapid games we played each other, and on the night decided to give up playing 1.b4 (Sokolsky's Opening/The Orang'utan). Colin was so unassuming that one might have been fooled into thinking he was just a regular club player. He was a perfect gentleman and will be thoroughly missed by the chess community here in London, England. Rest in peace perfect gentleman. |

 | | Domdaniel: Sad news. I followed Colin's games in the BCM and Chess magazine from the 1970s to the 90s -- we were much the same age. I never played him, though I saw him at various events over the years.
Colin was remarkable in that he remained an active player into his fifties, even after suffering a stroke. His thoughts and ideas on the nature of chess thinking will survive him -- as will many excellent games. |

His thoughts and ideas on the nature of chess thinking will survive him -- as will many excellent games.> Have never read any of his works, but judging from the comments here, Crouch left his mark. Sounds like someone who would have been a pleasure to meet. Closest we ever got, though, was several common opponents in this DB. |

 | | Domdaniel: <perf> Hi there ... I've just been looking at one of your games, vs James Rizzitano ... it's in his book, 'Understanding Your Chess', which is really very good. He gives a lot of useful advice on how to analyse one's own games and construct a repertoire. Obvious enough, but I don't recall seeing this area explored so well before. Did you play JR many times? |

 | | Domdaniel: <Closest we ever got, though, was several common opponents in this DB.> Same here. The chess universe is really quite small, when you get down to it. |

Jun-20-15 | | Tomlinsky: <What was your most embarrassing moment at the chessboard? I played Tom Wiley in a county match many years ago and built up a nice position. Then he castled and I couldn’t understand why i hadn’t considered this, and my initiative disappeared and I eventually lost. It was only on the coach journey back that I suddenly realized that he had castled through check!> Kingpin 26 (Spring 1996) |

 | | perfidious: <Dom....Did you play (Jim Rizzitano) many times?> Sorry for the belated response; am only reading this now. Believe we met thirteen times in all, the score being 10-2 for Jim with one draw. The game I submitted to CG was actually our last meeting: he moved to Chicago for a bit, then I played rather less in major open events in New England after 1987 before returning to Vermont in 1989. As to the opponents Crouch and I had in common, the ones who jump off the page are: Rind, Michaelides, Shamkovich, Burnett and Ilya Gurevich.
Tough lot: scored +2 -5 =2 against them. |

 | | Richard Taylor: I knew or thought I knew he had died. I had a book about chess strategy by him from the library, it was a large book and interesting. I think I heard he died from Kingscrusher q.v. whose enthusiastic YouTubes on chess are very good. Sad he died so young. |
