| Whitehat1963: This guy played a veritable Who's Who of the chess world in 1922 alone (perhaps serving as a single tournament's whipping boy?), losing to Alekhine, Rubinstein, Reti, Maroczy, Euwe, Tartakower, Bogoljubov, Vidmar, and sitting champion Capablanca. But he did manage to beat Znosko-Borovsky, and to draw with a well-past-his-prime Tarrasch a year later. Then he disappeared for five years. But he never managed to again play such high-level competition. Does anyone know much about him? |

Maestro.
Professore di filosofia. Nel 1900 sconfisse il prof. Simeoni per 10 a 1. Nel torneo U.S.I. di Roma 1911 giunse quinto con 8 punti su 16. L' marzo 1913 fu l'unico a pattare con Tarrasch che giocava in simultanea 16 partite. Nel 1919 vinse il torneo sociale dell'Associazione Impiegati Civili di Napoli. Giunse secondo, a mezzo punto da Rosselli, a Viareggio nel 1920 e fu ancora secondo dietro Rosselli nel quadrangolare di Genova dello stesso anno. Nel 1921 vinse a Viareggio la prima edizione dl campionato italiano, precedendo Singer. Prese parte al torneo di Londra del 1922 , dove si battè contro Capablanca ed Alekhine, ma giunse ultimo. Nel 1923, perse a Napoli la sfida con Rosselli (+2 =5 -6), valevole come campionato italiano e al torneo internazionale di Triste giunse penultimo. Nel torneo di Napoli del 1927 giunse terzo con 5,5 su 8. Nel torneo preolimpionico di Perugia 1928 fu quarto con De Nardo. Nel 1929 giunse penultimo a Venezia e nono, con 7,5 su 14, nel campionato italiano di Napoli 1937. A Savona nel 1938 giunse terzo dietro Castaldi e Sacconi mentre a Roma nel 1939 giunse undicesimo con Del Pezzo. |

Philosophy professor. In 1900 beat professor Simeoni 10-1. In the Rome USI 1911 tournament finished fifth with 8 out of 16. In March 1913 he was the only one to draw with Tarrasch in a simul with 16 players. In 1919 he won a tournament in Naples sponsored by God knows who. Finished second, a half-point behind Roselli, in Viareggio in 1922 and was again second behind Roselli in a quadrangular in Genova the following year. In 1921 he won in Viareggio the first Italian championship, ahead of Singer. [Was Roselli sick?] Took part in the London 1922 tournament, where he played against Capablanca and Alekhine, but finished last. In 1923, he lost a match?? to Roselli in Naples, (+2 =5 -6), ceding?? to him the Italian championship, and in the international tournament in Trieste he finished next-to-last. At Naples 1927 he finished third with 5.5/8. In the pre-olympic tournament in Perguia he tied for fourth with De Nardo. In 1929 he finished next to last in Venice and ninth, with 7.5/14, in the Italian championship at Naples in 1937. In Savona in 1938 he finished third behind Castaldi and Sacconi while at Rome in 1939 he finished 11th?? with Del Pezzo. |

| notsodeepthought: <keypusher> Excellent job, especially for someone who says s/he doesn't speak Italian (but clearly you do). In the event one really wanted to quibble... "valevole come campionato italiano" (with reference to the 1923 match) means "valid for the Italian championship". The "Associazione Impiegati Civili di Napoli" would be the "Association of Naples Civil Employees" - which implies that your translation "God knows who" is just fine... and "undicesimo" means, indeed, "11th." |
