Zalmen Kornin was born on December 30, 1957 in Curitiba, Brazil. He learned to play chess at the age of 9. He was the National Junior Brazilian Blitz Champion in 1975, placed 3rd Brazilian South Zonal Florianópolis 1977, National Student Team Champion João Pessoa 1979, tied for 1st in International Joinville Open 1981.

Since 1986, Zalmen mostly retired from OTB competition and has turned his attention to the cultural and artistic side of chess. He has become a composer of chess problems and studies. He is a regular contributor to as User: vonKrolock.
