| 15 games, 1974 - Tal at the Havana Olympiad 1966
[This collection is part of Game Collection: Tal's Tournament and Matches 1949-1973 ] These are all the games Mikhail Tal played at the <Havana Olympiad 1966>, dated and in correct round order.[1 ] The event was organized by Jose Barreras, and funded lavishly by the Cuban government. There was great fan interest, prompting a Cuban newspaper to write "At this moment the whole country is one mighty chessboard."[2 ] Tal played 3d board for an exceptionally strong Soviet team, featuring world champion Tigran Petrosian on 1st board, Boris Spassky on 2d board, and Leonid Stein on 4th board. The depth of this squad was highlighted by the fact that the 1st and 2d reserve boards were occupied by such strong international grandmasters as Viktor Korchnoi and Lev Polugaevsky. [3 ] In the preliminary rounds, held 25 Oct - 4 Nov, the USSR cruised easily to victory in Group 1, winning every game.[2 ] Tal missed the first four rounds because he had been hit over the head with a bottle shortly before the tournament started.[4 ] This bizarre mishap didn't seem to affect his play, however, as he averaged just 29 moves a game in mowing down opponents from Uruguay, Switzerland and Spain in the last 3 rounds of the preliminaries. The finals were held 4-20 Nov, and in Group A only the Americans looked to mount any serious opposition to the Soviets.[2 ] This was due almost entirely to the play of Bobby Fischer, who racked up an incredible score of +14 -1 =2 through the course of the tournament. The USSR-USA match came in final round 2. Spassky held Fischer to a draw, but Tal proved the hero by winning the only game of the match, against Robert Byrne. Tal maintained his stellar form to the end, winning the gold medal on 3d board with a score of +11 -0 =2. The USSR triumphed over the USA, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, East Germany, Denmark, Iceland, Spain, Norway and Cuba.[5 ] Tal missed the last round and the closing celebrations. Since the USSR had already clinched first, the Soviet team gave him permission to fly out early to Spain, where he was slated to play in Palma de Mallorca (1966). [4 ] [Notes

[This collection is part of Game Collection: Tal's Tournament and Matches 1949-1973 ] These are all the games Mikhail Tal played at the <Leipzig Olympiad 1960>, in correct round order. The German Chess Federation organized the 14th Olympiad in the historic city of Leipzig. Alluding to Napoleon's famous defeat at Leipzig by Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden, chess historian Árpád Földeák summed up the event: "Thus the 'Battle of Nations' was relived once again on a peaceful field..." In conjunction with the tournament, the Stadtgeschichtlichen Museum organized an exhibit called "Chess Through the Ages."[1 ] In the two years since the last Olympiad, Tal had become world champion, and now took his throne on the USSR first board, followed by Mikhail Botvinnik, Paul Keres and Soviet champion Viktor Korchnoi. Vasily Smyslov and Tigran Petrosian occupied the reserve boards.[2 ] The preliminaries were played 17-27 October, and Tal sat out the first 3 rounds. He joined the fray with a victory over future FIDE president Florencio Campomanes, but gave up three draws before the finals, played 28 October - 9 November.[1] Tal didn't mind drawing Bobby Fischer in final round 5, however, remarking that "it was only after this encounter that he began to respect me."[3 ] Tal went on to finish well, except for the last round, when he unaccountably lost to the untitled Englishman Jonathan Penrose. This loss cost him the gold medal on 1st board, which went to Karl Robatsch. Tal explained that the final round came a day before his birthday, which he wanted to be free. But the Soviet team captain insisted he play, prompting Tal to joke that he would therefore lose the game.[3 ] Tal settled for the silver medal with a more than respectable score of +8 -1 =6. The USSR finished 1st over USA, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Argentina, West Germany and East Germany.[2 ] [Notes

| 3 games, 1973 - Tal at the Munich Olympiad 1958
[This collection is part of Game Collection: Tal's Tournament and Matches 1949-1973 ] These are all the games Mikhail Tal played at the <Munich Olympiad 1958>, in correct round order. The German Chess Federation organised the event and chose Munich as the site, in order to help mark the 800th anniversary of the founding of that city.[1 ] Tal made his first appearance in a non-student olympiad on 1st reserve board, which may have seemed too modest an assignment. He had won both the USSR Championship (1957) and the USSR Championship (1958), and FIDE had awarded him the international grandmaster title in August 1957.[2 ] Nonetheless, Tal himself did not think he should have been given a higher board: "I was very well aware that Mikhail Botvinnik, playing on board one, and Vasily Smyslov on board two, and Paul Keres and David Bronstein had given a great deal more to chess..."[3 ] In fact, just four months earlier Botvinnik and Smyslov had played a match for the world championship. The preliminary rounds were held 1-10 Oct, and Tal scored a team-leading 5½ points from 6 games.[1 ] Only a draw against Jens Enevoldsen prevented a clean sweep. The Soviets easily qualified for Final Group A, held 11-23 Oct, but they faced stubborn opposition through the first 4 rounds.[1 ] World champion Botvinnik drew his games against the USA and West Germany and was promptly rested for the next two rounds. The best the USSR could do in their round 4 match with tournament leaders Yugoslavia was to draw each game, making no headway. Tal helped keep his team close by scoring valuable points against lesser opposition in these early rounds.[4 ] It was not until the 8th-10th rounds that the Soviets took the lead by posting clean scores against England, Germany, and Austria. They went on to win by a comfortable margin over Yugoslavia, Argentina, USA, Czechoslovakia and East Germany. Tal finished with +12 -0 =3, more than good enough for the gold medal on 1st reserve board.[4 ] He later reported that the tournament highlight for him was the opportunity to share a stage with Mikhail Botvinnik, and watch him conduct post mortem analyses.[3 ] [Notes

Tal scored +7 -0 =3 on 1st board. According to <Olimpbase>, this gave Tal the gold medal, but according to http://www.suomenshakki.fi/arkisto/..., the medal rankings were "calculated directly from points scored and not, as usual, by percentages." In this case, Miroslav Filip, who played three more games than Tal, would have received the gold medal on 1st board. The USSR finished 1st, over Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, USA, Romania, East Germany and Iceland. <Tal> rested during rounds one (USSR vs Sweden), four (USSR vs Mongolia), and eleven (USSR vs Ecuador).
