MARY BAIN
(born Jun-08-1900, died Oct-26-1972, 72 years old) Hungary (federation/nationality United States of America)

[what is this?]

Mary Bain was born in Hungary. She was Women's World Championship Challenger in 1937 and 1952 and was awarded the WIM title in 1952. She was the first American woman to represent the U.S. in an organized chess competition. She was also US Women's Champion from 1951-53, losing the title to Mona May Karff.

Perhaps her most enduring game is an 11 move victory over Jose Raul Capablanca while the Cuban was giving a simultaneous exhibition (see Capablanca vs M Bain, 1933).

Apr-15-05  aragorn69: After looking at the other games here attributed to Mary Bain, I must say I am pretty sure that Capa was Black (as stands in cg's database) in that blindfold game... Ms. Bain was no stranger to losing pawns or pieces in the opening, which was not exactly the Cuban's case. Sorry <RichWhy> ;-)
Apr-15-05  Jamespawn: I entered this game with Capa in the computer and it has Black winning. I wonder why he resigned ?
Apr-15-05  Jamespawn: I see one poster that says Capa was white so that makes more sense.
Apr-15-05  marekg248: <aragorn69> Chess explorations by Edward Winter has it this way: J.R.Capablanca (simultaneous) - M. Bain, Hollywood, 21 May 1933 (CN 1653)
Apr-16-05  refutor: i was able to dig up some mary bain games from the megabase...there's a bunch of games from the 1963 olympiad as well, but not against anyone i've heard of...i will post some of them and submit them

Apr-16-05  Karpova: <refutor>
never heard of fred reinfeld or nicolas rossolimo?

Fred Reinfelds wrote several books on chess while rossolimo has his rossolimo attack in the sicilian defense.

Apr-16-05  refutor: i meant there was no one in the 1963 olympiad that i had heard of...i have heard of reinfeld, rossolimo, ulvestad and kalme...that's why i posted these here btw, the mary bain article was from January 2004 of chess life ...btw that chess life article mentions here 11 move win over Capablanca
Apr-16-05  Karpova: <btw that chess life article mentions here 11 move win over Capablanca>

you already mentioned that but it doesn't seem to be clear that capa was the one to lose. i doubt capa would fall for something like that after 30 years of chess.

Apr-16-05  refutor: <i doubt capa would fall for something like that after 30 years of chess>

why? capa wasn't infallible...he could've resigned in 11 moves in this game Samisch vs Capablanca, 1929

Apr-16-05  Karpova: i never claimed capa to be infallible but thanks for the link. i know that game and it's quite intersting since capa goes on playing (against saemisch so why ahould he resign against mary bain??) and makes saemisch work hard for his win.

I'm asking because White could play 23.Qxg3 instead of 23.Qxf3 in this position (after 22...Bxf3):

Bishoprick: Anyone remember Mary Bain's Chess emporium/coffee house on 42nd Street, almost across the street from John Fischer's NY Chess & Checker Club? Didn't last long, but was a fun place to play chess in the hurly-burly of the City.

GrahamClayton: I found a reference to Mary Bain in the August 4, 1945 edition of the Miami News.

Mary Bain was the co-ordinator of a program in 11 south-eatern US States that had wounded US soldiers play chess as part of their rehabilitation, as part of her role as the southeatern area director of the US Chess Federation.

The article also mentions that Mary was the husband of Leslie Balogh Bain, a Daily News columnist.

Aug-08-10  BobCrisp: She enjoyed a Les Bain love affair.

HeMateMe: Sounds like the topic could be found in Denker's "The Bobby Fischer I Knew, and other Stories".

There was another book that went into detail about NYC's fun years of game halls and chess hustlers, before the explosion in real estate vaules killed all non essential endeavors. It might have been Bill Hook's "Hooked on Chess", or maybe a book by Larry Evans. 14th Street had game clubs, as well as Times Square.

I was at Brighton Beach last week, during this hot weather. This is part of a long beach, that connects Coney Island with the Russian/Ukrainian area of Brighton Beach. Saw just one game of chess, two guys playing a slow game on the boardwalk. I would have thought there might be a bit more of the royal game being played.

I'm just returning to this page and noticed a 4 y.o. query from Karpova. I'm a bit late, but here's the answer: I looked up the game in Chess Review and indeed it shows 23. QxB QxQ 24. BxQ, just as shown in thegiven pgn.

My site was moved to a different host and the page referenced is now at http://www.edochess.ca/batgirl/Wome... However, my host (who has control over all my pages now) has been unable to make the game viewer work.
