SUSAN POLGAR
(born Apr-19-1969, 56 years old) Hungary
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

GM (and WIM) Zsuzsa (Susan) Polgár was born in Budapest, Hungary, and along with her two younger sisters, Judit Polgar and Sofia Polgar, she was taught chess by her father, Laszlo Polgár. By 1984 she became the top-rated woman chess player in the world. Later that year, FIDE, in a controversial decision, granted 100 rating points to every female player except Zsuzsa.

In 1991, Susan achieved the men's grandmaster title, and later that year, her sister Judit Polgar earned the title as well. She is a FIDE Senior Trainer. In 1996, Susan won the Women's World Championship, but refused to defend her title in 1999 against Jun Xie, because she believed the conditions were unfair. In 2004 she competed in the 36th Chess Olympiad, winning gold medals for points and for the highest performance rating. In total, she has won ten Olympiad medals during her career, and has never lost a single game in any Olympiad. Her highest-ever FIDE rating (2577) was achieved on the January 2005 list. This list also returned her to her position as the number one active female player in the world. In 2005, she broke Andrew D Martin 's 2004 world record by playing 326 opponents in a simultaneous exhibition, with a 309 wins, 14 draws and 3 losses for a 96.93% result.* This record stood for 5 years before being broken by Kiril Georgiev.

Susan lived for many years in New York City, where she ran the Polgár Chess Center (http://www.polgarchess.com). She also resided in Lubbock, Texas, where she served as coach to the Texas Tech University chess team - but has since moved to the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri. She is one of the best-selling chess authors worldwide, and she speaks seven languages fluently. She posts at Chessgames as User: Susan Polgar. She is the mother of National Master Tom Polgar-Shutzman.

May-30-05  Wilhelm: WordChampeen here is link for the origin of the word 'ajedrez' http://www.elcastellano.org/ajedrez...

Chaturanga became chatrang then shatranj then axatraz and finally ajedrez.

Jaque mate (check mate) comes from sha mat, and English rook apparently from rukh (rock) which gives castling as enROQUE in Spanish.

Eric Schiller: I think we should all keep in mind that this is an online blog and that the technology, unfortunately, doesn't include a spellchecker. In any case, a great number of Chessgames members are not native speakers of English and there is absolutely no reason to expect a blog to be written exclusively in so-called correct English.

As a linguist, I know better than to criticize someone just because their language use is different from mine or from the standards given in the ridiculous books that are used in an attempt to teach some form of standard English.

What matters in a blog is content, not form. as long as writers can convey their intended meaning, we shouldn't worry about the other bits.

Please remember that English is the messiest language on the planet and that mastering its irregularities and inconsistencies is a task that requires more time than most people can provide.

For those who think that learning English is a trivial matter, check out my web page on the top 10 questions to annoy your English teacher with:

http://www.ericschiller.com/ling/pa...

and some of the other papers at my site.

Meanwhile, let's suggest to our hosts here that they find a way to incorporate both spell checking and automatic translation in this wonderful site. And let's not get down on people who have difficulties mastering and using the mess known as English.

May-30-05  buscher07: <Eric Schiller>
I have to say that I agree with you. Spelling and grammer are not some people's strong points and we should not fault them for their typos. I am also curious to see if the USCF president is really posting on this website. Furthermore, I believe what Susan and Paul are saying and fully support them. Have a nice day everyone!! :)

Eric Schiller: <buscher> I'm pretty sure that USCF officials post directly. Since there is an election going on, they are unhappy to see some much negativity. But I generally agree with Susan too. It is very important to hear from Susan, who is doing all she can to promote chess and make things better for all of us. As a USCF "outsider" I know exactly what she's going through, and how important it is for all of us to support her efforts.

That said, I have suggested that Chessgames have a USCF thread so that these matters can be handled in their own threads, and we can get back to admiring Susan's exploits at the chessboard in this section.

TheAlchemist: <Eric Schiller>: And I thought I understood English pretty well (though it's not my mother tongue), but looking at your site... I quickly snapped back to reality :-)
May-30-05  arielbekarov: <To all> How is the best way to transfer this discussion to "another room"?
I'm afraid that I am causing that this specific topic "a certain level in English usage should be required among officials in USA" takes too much space as it is primarily of my interest to support Susan Polgar and Paul Truong in their important fight.

Nevertheless, it gives a lot to ventilate our thoughts regarding the usage of language-communication in general and as in this example the English language in particular so I would be happy for any suggestion. This is something that is of our concern as there are few concepts that have such a strong impact on us as *the word*.

<Eric Schiller> Your way of describing English makes sense, even though I find it a most beautiful mess. I am aware of the extreem difficulties in English and I keep telling that words like perfect, logic have no place in the structure of any language. I can imagine that the reading of my long postings is hard to digest. I find it hard myself and I am hesitating about almost every single phrase. Still I am mentioning it as it's not quite clear to me whether you have understood the distinction I make between an official posting signed by the President of USCF and all who are participating on this site. If we are going to except a posting with such demands in a poor language from a person who sits on a leading position in the most important umbrella organization of chess in USA, I am afraid that we have to deal with this sort of arrogance for still too many years and the art of chess will suffer from it. Susan Polgar who always writes very well-written postings will, of course, manage. Though I will never understand why we have so much compassionate feelings for a powerful person like the President of USCF who in a poor way attacks Susan Polgar.

I have clearly written that I love the diversity of the present English language and in no way I ask from members in general to write messages that live up to what is called Standard English. This is indeed a life work. But what is your message for me, who wholeheartedly tries to write as beutifully and accurate as I can in English. I try my best in French and Russian who I spend much time on now, and my teachers wouldn't recognise anything else than my will to master it. What the result will be is another story! Your signals as a linguist are confusing to me.
I can understand the idea with spell checking but I am very surprised about your "automatic translation" proposal. Then I prefer to read even a less accurate message by an official in USA and to writing my love-letters in my poor English as it is something that I can stand for. We have machines in chess and it is good, but G-D forbid in matters of language.
Never I will allow a machine to touch my words.

The content is indeed what it is all about, but shouldn't we strive for mastering the form so that we then can liberate ourselves like a composer who has to master the form in order to reach out with his content.

May-30-05  vonKrolock: Maybe it can be recalled that many great leaders and demagogues from the past (and present) had (have) a very precarious comand of their own first language - and notwhistanding dominated and influenced millions of people with carisma, will, strenght of character etc

I tend to believe that my own native language is the hardest to speak, write or hear from those spoken in the major Panamerican countries, and that we brazilians are the only three-linguals in the continent: we must to learn English in order to comunicate with the world, so when we meet the North-Americans, they can speak their own language. As for our Spanish-speaking neighbours (from Mexico to Chile and Argentina): We have to know some Spanish too, because we understand what they spell, but they dont' understand what we spell - the spoken Portuguese is somewhat misterious...

May-31-05  sxexp1: Susan, thank you for posting
at Chessgames.com in "Zsuzsa Polgar"

I have a friend, Email Chess User
handle of Agt71. She plays Internet
Chess at a well known British site
where Standard Chess is played along
with many other Chess variants. With
minor adjustments this site may just
become the PREMIER area on the
Internet to play Chess.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Back in November of 2004 when you
were leading the American Women to
a Silver Medal in the 36th Chess
Olympiad in Calvia, Spain, Agt71
was trying to set up a Ladies
Championship at the British site.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Her aim was to foster more Chess
participation by women. At the
time she had games with the #1 and
#2 females there. These fine women
have since left for unknown reasons
---maybe harassment.

She was also playing and eight-year
-old girl [since turned nine] who has
also left the site. Certain language by
use of abbreviations commonly used in
instant messaging are commonly thrown
around at the forum and Yahoo! group area
where members post. This is not very
conducive for younger players to see.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The main result of her trying to
promote play at this site by females
was male players trying to join her All
Female Championship. She was severely
chastised at the forum and Yahoo! group
sites for trying to do this.

Let's see: FIDE sanctions separate
male/female events as does USCF and
just about every other Chess association.
Her aim is to promote Chess on a class
basis: Just as age is used, so shall
gender.

One result has been she is no
longer allowed to POST messages either
to the forum or the Yahoo group for this
Internet site.

Other women have left the site and she is
now the top female there in Standard Chess.
One such player, BTW, had the unique
Chess User handle of: Thegreatpolgar. Seems
she revered you so much the handle had to
be hers. She made no secret she was female,
she made no secret she played everyone, and
it was no secret SHE BEAT EVERYONE, too.

Seems this lady plays out of Scandinavia.
Her Chess prowess is greater than my friend
as Tgp was in the Top 10 of just about every
variant at this site before she unceremoniously
Resigned ALL of her games and left. Maybe
harassment again, I do not know for sure.
___________________________________

Back in November you and the American team
were basking in the glory after Calvia. My friend
was hospitalized for nervous exhaustion as a
direct result of what I just related to you.
This is one reason I am where I am with the
Chess organization I am now a part of. I am
here to help her out.

All this prelude for one little question:
When she returns from a long vacation at the
end of June, I will show her this post---do
you have any advice or words of encouragement
you would care to add to it?

Jun-01-05  Chris00nj: I think a match that ended 7 months ago is a pretty poor excuse too. Your little sister was playing above her old level 5 months after having a baby. It's not just the single event of having a baby that would affect play, but the many sleepless nights that follow, ruining any attempt to get into a good preparation routine. Nonetheless she was still 4= at Corus.

The truth is that is he less deserving of his "world champion" title every day. There are a couple people who would most likely beat him in a match, namely Anand & Topalov.
