May-03-09 | | technical draw: According to New in Chess magazine (and writer Georg Mohr also of Slovenia) "Planinc" should correctly be written and pronounced "Planinec". If that is so then that's the end of all the planning puns. I'll take his countryman's pronounciation so CG take note, PLANINEC..... |

 | | TheAlchemist: <technical draw> I've been arguing that for over a year now, you can see a few posts back that I've found out he changed his last name in 1993. Now, I don't know how he was able to do that or why |
|
May-03-09 | | technical draw: Ok, I see your post and CG's bio noting the change. The article in NIC doesn't mention a name change it just uses Planinec. So we can still use some puns like the movie about invading chess monsters : "Planinc 9 from Outer Space" |

|
Dec-24-09 | | Tripler: There's a Russian poker player called Alekhine (different spelling, Alekhine is supposed to be the French form of his name after he (the chessplayer, not the poker player!) moved there from Russia... I say "moved" when in fact (?who knows?) he escaped using a false passport) - on TV it's pronounced Al-Yo-Kin, though the above mentioned ahl-YO-kheen is correct (stress on second syllable of Russian names is common e.g. KasPARov.) Not that this has anything to do with Planinc, who played some incredible games. I always wondered what happened to him - did he really work as a bicycle repairman? There was an old Monty Python sketch with Terry Jones (dressed as Superman) turning up as Bicycle Repair Man to, er, repair punctured bicycle tyres... So maybe it was appropriate that Planinc was a bicycle repair man. Or maybe I'm just talking gibberish;-)
Happy Christmas everyone. |

Jun-09-10 | | bravado1: I think he changed his last name to Planinec. I wonder why he's still called Planinc here, perhaps because it's better for puns. Anyway, we should respect his wishes and I think his last name needs to be corrected. |
|
Nov-19-10 | | mujotomi: OK, I know it's outdated, but just for clarification about pronunciation of Planin(e)c and Pirc. Since I'm from Slovenia I should know... "Plan" is pronounced as in English "plant" (without sound of "t"), "in" as in English "in", and "c" as "ts" in "tsetse fly". Accent is on "i". I presume Albin changed his surname, because it's grammatically correct spelling for this name nowadays, which in English means Mountaineer, and Planinc is how many (maybe lazy) Slovenians pronounce Planinec. But nevertheless Planinc is still frequent surname in Slovenia.
Pirc: "Pi" like in "pee", "r" like in "rabbit", and "c" the same as in Planinc. |

Nov-21-10 | | friend: hello to all! sth about the d-bate about his name... I am almost certain he did not change his name. I have spoken to woman here in Slovenia who researched his bio and helped make a documentary about his life, and she had come across fascinating facts.. This name change happened due to a byrocratical misshap. At the beginning of 90s he was hospitalised in a mental instit. and so his case was taken over by social workers..they probably just miss-spelled his name. Just like it happened in `68 when he got employed in a bicycle factory Rog ((Ljubljana, Slovenia)- this researcher has a scanned employee sheet). Planinc probably knew nothing about that then as he did not in 93. The film is an emotional non-typical documentary about not only a genious chess player, but also about every possible one of us, about people like him. -simple, humble, wounded, amasing artists. Film features his colleages, his partner in love-an
amasing woman who is also a chess player, friends-people who have taken care of him at the end of his life and Boris Spasky.
Film was directed by fascinating author Jan Cvitkoviè. here is the link to Slovene national TV where you can see the film, but unfortunatly it is in Slovene language. The minute it is released with eng subs, I ll post it again!
All well!

|
Oct-23-12 | | brankat: <ughaibu> There was a rumor circulating in New York during 1924 tournament to the effect that Dr.Lasker had been rubbing in garlic all over his skin to stun the opponents. That in addition to the smoke of the lowest quality cigars. Good ones, given to him as presents, he saved for after the games. No wonder he won so impressively :-) |
|
Oct-23-12 | | ughaibu: Garlicgate, that's a conspiracy theory I've not come across before. Started by Alekhine and Bogolubow? |
|
Oct-23-12 | | brankat: <ughaibu>
I think it was G.Maroczy who started it. He did have an old ax to grind with the good doctor. The others, apparently, didn't object :-) I read the story in an 1927 issue (prior to '27 New York "Candidates" tourney) of V.Vukovic's chess monthly "Sahovski Glasnik" (Chess Herald). |
