Jul-25-09  Slaven MNE: Games started! Chuky decided for 1.c4, you could never guess what opening he will play. Caruana-Gelfand is Petrov, I hope Caruana has prepared something special against this defence. Moro decided to play caro-cann with 4.Nd7 instead of main 4.Bf5, we will see is he going to defeat Alekseev twice here.
Jul-25-09  waustad: Chuky has been taking fairly quick draws as black. Here is a good chance to go to +2, so I expect him to go for it. His Maroczy bind set up could be interesting. Caruana seems to be trying to get away from the drawish lines for which the Petrov is famous.
Jul-25-09  Absentee: Looks like home preparation, Caruana only used 4 minutes.
Jul-25-09  Slaven MNE: <Absentee: Looks like home preparation, Caruana only used 4 minutes.>

It still looks drawish

Jul-25-09  Koenigsgambit: i think caruana could have caught gelfands knight on move 20 with a3

After 20. ... Be5, Black is fine. (20. a3 Be5 21.Rd2 Nxa3 22.bxa3 Bxc3).

Jul-25-09  frogbert: alekseev - morozevich

10... be4 played, attacking rh1.

11. bc4 is a funny reply (probably not good, but...)

the obvious point is that 11... bxh1?? results in 12. bxf7 mate - but also that white can castle if nd5, or after bd5 bxd5 qxd5. :o)

Jul-25-09  waustad: Caruana-Gelfand 1/2-1/2
Jul-25-09  Absentee: <waustad: Caruana-Gelfand 1/2-1/2>

A pity, Caruana had some chances, especially with an hour on the clock.

Jul-25-09  vonKrolock: 1/2?! <va bene... chi va piano va sano e chi va sano va... lontano>

Alekseev vs Morozevich for me looks like a truce coming too, but of course whith <Moro> we can never be sure about...

Jul-25-09  ancible: seems like alekseev is low on time. If the clocks are right he only has a little over a minute per move to reach time control...
Jul-25-09  Slaven MNE: <ancible> Well if clocks on chessok are correct Ivanchuk has only 30 sec per move to reach 40th move.
Jul-25-09  ancible: Ha, good point. You can see which game im most interested in...

Ivanchuck 17 moves in 56 sec

Jul-25-09  Slaven MNE: <ancible> Yes, but in official site he has 13 minutes, while on chessok 56 seconds, hope the official is correct
Jul-25-09  ancible: Hope he does have some time. I'm not a huge Chuky fan, but it'd be a shame for the tourney co lead to flag
Jul-25-09  Slaven MNE: Chessok is surely wrong, he would lose this already if they are correct because it's 00:00:00 on his clock right now
Jul-25-09  Slaven MNE: It looks like Moro is going to win
Jul-25-09  waustad: Chuky drew.
Jul-25-09  waustad: Alekseev-Moro just barely made time control.

Peligroso Patzer: In Alekseev-Morozevich (after 41. Ka2), 41. ... e6 looks tempting. Is there something wrong with that idea?

Peligroso Patzer: To answer my own question, I suppose if 41. … e6, White can play 42. d6 because if 42. … Rxd6 White has the zwischenzug 43. Qc8+.
Jul-25-09  YouRang: Oops. Computer thinks Moro just blundered a bit with 43...e6. It went from "black better" to "white better".
Jul-25-09  unsound: It looks like Moro overlooked the fact that white can lose the rook on d3 then play e7, so the pin on the pawn is ineffective.
Jul-25-09  ROADDOG: Will Moro draw at this point?
Jul-25-09  unsound: I mean after 44.dxe6, obviously.
