Apr-17-07  Thrajin: this guy's name makes me hungry. mmmm oven fries... perhaps <Ketchup Lover> can help me out here...
Feb-02-09  sagahelten: I have a Danish book he wrote on the Scandinavian opening. Not bad. There seems to be no games in this opening by JOFN in the database.
Feb-02-09  gus inn: Actually his birthday is 23/02 , so .. ?

You can check it with BIDMONFA .

Feb-02-09  whiteshark: <sagahelten: <I have a Danish book he wrote on the Scandinavian opening.>>

There is a pocket book <Skandinavisk> writen by von Niels Jorgen Fries Nielsen 88 pages, publisher: Skakcentralens (1982)

Maybe his brother?

Feb-02-09  sagahelten: You're right! The book <Skandinavisk> (Danish, 1982) is by Niels Jørgen Fries Nielsen! It was SO long ago I looked into it the last time. Jens Ove is IM (Elo 2403), Niels Jørgen has 2393. If they are brother, they have very much the same strength. Interesting... Niels Jørgen is the leader of Helsinge Chess Club, one of the best in Denmark.
Feb-02-09  sagahelten: Well, I looked into the book, and Niels Jørgen lived in Esbjerg in 1981, which means that they come from the same city. I guess we can assume that they are brothers.
Feb-02-09  sagahelten: Niels Jørgen is only two years older (b. 1958)
Feb-02-09  WhiteRook48: Oven Fries Nielsen (ouch!)

To who? Bent Larsen?

Troller: In 1982 Jens Kristiansen was Danish champion.

Indeed the 2 Fries Nielsens are brothers. The city of Esbjerg hosted a string of strong tournaments (Vesterhavsturneringen, "The West Sea Tournament") starting in the late 1970s. The game J O Fries Nielsen vs Short, 1984 is from the event in which Nigel earned his final grandmaster norm.

Penguincw: Today, with black, Nielsen upset Jan Timman (rated 212 points higher) with the black pieces! With that, he is now 4/4, one of 7 players to remain 4/4.

Timman vs J O Fries Nielsen, 2014

By my unofficial calculation, he's gained 12.3 rating points so far. Early bid for 3rd GM norm?

Tomorrow, he has white against Super GM Alexander Moiseenko, rated 2707. A win will gain him 8.5 points, draw 3.5 and loss drops him 1.5 points.
