There is a pocket book <Skandinavisk> writen by von Niels Jorgen Fries Nielsen 88 pages, publisher: Skakcentralens (1982)

Maybe his brother?

Feb-02-09  sagahelten: You're right! The book <Skandinavisk> (Danish, 1982) is by Niels Jørgen Fries Nielsen! It was SO long ago I looked into it the last time. Jens Ove is IM (Elo 2403), Niels Jørgen has 2393. If they are brother, they have very much the same strength. Interesting... Niels Jørgen is the leader of Helsinge Chess Club, one of the best in Denmark.
Feb-02-09  sagahelten: Well, I looked into the book, and Niels Jørgen lived in Esbjerg in 1981, which means that they come from the same city. I guess we can assume that they are brothers.
Feb-02-09  sagahelten: Niels Jørgen is only two years older (b. 1958)
Feb-02-09  WhiteRook48: Oven Fries Nielsen (ouch!)
Feb-02-12  Penguincw: < ...he finished 1st= in the Danish Championship of 1982 but lost the play-off. >

To who? Bent Larsen?

May-15-12  Troller: In 1982 Jens Kristiansen was Danish champion.

Indeed the 2 Fries Nielsens are brothers. The city of Esbjerg hosted a string of strong tournaments (Vesterhavsturneringen, "The West Sea Tournament") starting in the late 1970s. The game J O Fries Nielsen vs Short, 1984 is from the event in which Nigel earned his final grandmaster norm.
