perfidious: Carl Pilnick is an object example of when not to judge a player by FIDE rating: many years ago, while not in the class of Reshevsky/Kashdan/Fine, he was one of the strongest American players.

FSR: <amolv> (belatedly) He's way, way up there, but Samuel Reshevsky beats him by a decade (1917-91).

SwitchingQuylthulg: Francisco Benko has 77 years (1928-2005), but of course NN eats everyone else alive.

By rather bitter coincidence, the same years the USSR was extant.

FSR: <SwitchingQuylthulg> Good catch on Francisco Benko. And yes, NN has hung his face to everyone from Greco in 1497 to Kasparov in 2010.

<keypusher> Interesting point, although Wikipedia says the Soviet Union as such wasn't established until 1922. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet...

Jul-17-13  Abdel Irada: <And yes, NN has hung his face to everyone from Greco in 1497 to Kasparov in 2010.>

On the other hand, he has also recorded some startling upsets.

Phony Benoni: Another guy with 74 years is Edward Lasker (1902-1976). Only 72 years for Arnold Denker (1929-2001), but he seems to be the only other nine-decade player along with Francisco Benko and Reshevsky.
